JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Nursery

REPORTS TO: Principal

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. 1. Planning
    • Planning and preparing courses and lessons
    • Teaching, according to pupils' educational needs, including setting and marking work
    • Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils
  2. 2. General
    • Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils
    • Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and further education and careers
    • Making records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs where appropriate
    • Communicating with the parents of pupils
    • Co-operating with appropriate persons or bodies outside the school as approved
    • Participating in meetings related to the above
  3. 3. Assessment/Reporting
    • Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils
  4. 4. Staff Development/Professional Development
    • Participating in staff development and performance review as required
    • Reviewing teaching methods and programmes; pursuing further training and professional development
    • Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on study development, materials, teaching programmes, assessment and pastoral arrangements
  5. 5. Discipline/Health and Safety
    • Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding pupils’ health and safety
    • Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements
  6. 6. Public Examinations
    • Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations, recording and reporting assessments, and supervising pupils during examinations
  7. 7. Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration
    • Contributing to selection and development of staff; coordinating or managing the work of other teachers
    • Participating in curriculum, organisation and pastoral function planning; administrative tasks and supervision of staff support
    • Attending assemblies, registering attendance and supervising pupils as required
  8. 8. Number of days/Hours of work
    • Full-time teachers: available for 195 days per year with specific teaching and preparation expectations
    • Hours/locations determined by the Principal or Board as applicable
    • Classroom teaching hours capped in primary; mid-day supervision and break provisions as specified
    • Definitions of year and week as used in the governing terms
  9. 9. Staff cover
    • Supervising and teaching pupils when a teacher is not available, subject to school size and capacity constraints

SECTION 1 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Qualifications/Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland; be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post. Pre-employment checks apply.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ demonstrable experience teaching early years/foundation stage, with evidence of using a range of effective classroom strategies for diverse learners and those with Special Educational Needs.

SECTION 2 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Knowledge: Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding and child protection policy, the SEND Code of Practice, and a range of teaching strategies to meet learning needs.

Skills/Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management; ability to create a supportive, inclusive learning environment; initiative, problem-solving, flexibility; collaboration and teamwork; strong communication with pupils, parents and colleagues.

Values Orientation: Evidence of alignment with the School’s Values/ethos.

SECTION 3 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA

Desirable criteria (examples): more than 2 years in early years, experience with ICT in school, involvement in curriculum delivery, withdrawal groups, working with pupils with additional needs and creating IEPs, transition arrangements to primary school, etc. Shortlisting by application form.

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines regulated activity. If appointed to a post involving regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure will be required.
