Position Description

Job Title: Principal Systems Safety Engineer

Contract Type: Permanent Contract

Our business provides a full range of consultancy services from initial project feasibility to delivery, commissioning, and closeout. We deliver design and resource solutions to our wide range of clients ensuring safe and successful delivery.

We are now looking for a Principal Systems Safety Engineer to lead the railway systems safety activities on major rail projects within the UK and in the International domain. This position can be based out of any of our UK offices, with the flexibility of hybrid working based on business need.

Responsibilities:

1. Lead and coordinate the Safety assurance activities on projects.
2. Develop project-specific system safety strategies to comply with the project's processes.
3. Coordinate with disciplines within the wider organization; develop systems safety methodologies to comply with projects and clients' requirements.
4. Manage all aspects of system safety compliance, risk analysis and evaluation, preparation of safety products, and ensure that there is suitably qualified professional oversight of all matters related to system safety.
5. Co-ordinate system safety products, including systems definitions, Hazard Identification, system status records, and system safety cases.
6. Carry out hazard identification using hazard identification workshops (HazIDs), hazard and operability studies (HazOPs), and other methods.
7. Manage System Safety Hazard Records to capture details of the identified hazards.
8. Define the CSM-RA Risk Acceptance Principles to control the risk arising from each hazard and identify potential Safety Measures to make the risk associated with the hazard acceptable.
9. Provide compliance evidence and work collaboratively with the Client and the Assessing Body (AsBo) to achieve the required Authorisations under Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety) (ROGS) Regulations, and the Railways (Interoperability) Regulations, through the Safety Assessment Reports produced by the AsBo.
10. Provide compliance evidence to Approved Body (ApBo) and a Designated Body (DeBo) as independent assessors to ensure compliance with the RIR. Interoperability compliance is achieved by the obtention of an Interim Statement of Verification (ISV).
11. Ensure that associated products or systems are fully compliant with the relevant and applicable National Technical Specification Notices (NTSNs).
12. Develop Safety Case, Safety Process Management, Reliability analysis for all sub-systems.
13. Lead the team issuing and maintaining reports and logs (Hazard Log, RAM Management and Assurance Plan, Failure modes classification, RAM modeling plan, Safety requirements).
14. Verify and Assess the design & construction requirements and the functionality of the design for reliability and safety purposes.
15. Lead the team processing Capability performance analysis and Root cause failure analysis.
16. Take ownership of and manage all System Safety Assurance deliverables.
17. Directly lead the issues, as well as follow up on the related key performance indicators of the project.

Profile

In order to be considered, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

1. Degree (or equivalent) in engineering or an appropriate discipline.
2. Extensive rail experience gained in a similar position.
3. Experience of delivering system safety assurance activities in a rail environment, in design and build projects.
4. Experience in delivering in compliance with CSM, Interoperability and NTSNs, maintenance / operability requirements and standards for railway sub-systems.
5. Experience of managing a team of System Safety Engineers is advantageous.
6. Willingness to mentor and develop others. You want to pass your technical skills and rail knowledge to your team.
7. Excellent communication skills.
8. Team Player.
