Job description

Hi! My name is Catherine (Kat)! I am the PMA Lead Practitioner based in Suffolk. Firstly, thank you for your interest in the PMA Practitioner role. I wanted to take some time just to let you know what a typical day looks like in our department. We are a small and supportive team with a diverse range of backgrounds and experience. We are dedicated to improving the safety of staff and patients alike through delivering breakaway, conflict resolution and physical intervention training. On a typical day you may be responsible for delivering training to staff or attending the wards to give bespoke advice, supporting with policy reviews, developing our training curriculum and more! As a team we are placing a large emphasis on our own continued professional development, learning and education and welcome those who are keen to develop. It is an exciting time to join our team, we have just gained our own accreditation meeting the restraint reduction network training standards and have exciting plans. You will need to have been continuously employed in a support or care role within social care, education or a health care environment for a period of not less than two years.

Main duties of the job

This is not a nursing position based within the clinical teams. This is a training and education role within the education and development team. We welcome applications from those with a professional nursing registration or relevant degree such as therapy, psychology, health and social care, education and those with experience within training, education within health and social care.

It is preferable that you have some experience delivering training however you will be fully supported by our team to enable you to confidently deliver our training curriculum.

You will facilitate in the delivery of physical intervention and breakaway courses to all staff in accordance with the current syllabus and the restraint reduction network training standards. This is a busy role, and our training requirements mean that delivering training will be a large part of the role. This will include accurate record keeping and ensuring the safety of those we deliver training to. This post is based in Suffolk with the expectation to travel between Norfolk and Suffolk to deliver training. There will also be an expectation to deliver training to other organisations outside of the county and therefore you will be able and willing to travel which may include overnight stays. You will be able to communicate effectively and build strong relationships. You will be supported to give bespoke clinical advice and spend time getting to know the clinical environments.

Our hours are 09:00 - 17:00 Monday to Friday, bank holidays and weekends off, giving you valuable time with your families and friends.

Job responsibilities

To participate in the development and/or trial of new clinical and service innovations, which are evidence based under the direction of the PMA Team Lead.

You will maintain your own physical abilities and fitness ensuring you are able to fully carry out your role.

To provide training to all grades of staff and professions.

To work within the multidisciplinary team and be engaged in partnership working within other areas of the Trust, under the direction of the PMA Team Lead.

Assist senior staff to provide mental health advice particularly in the field of PMA and risk management issues, both within the organisation and externally.

Maintain up to date knowledge within the specific realm of PMA, keepingthe PMA Team Lead fully informed of any changes, maintaining up to date knowledge of legislation, guidance and policies in relation to PMA.

To maintain and provide accurate records, and reports as required by the PMA Team Lead, ensuring statutory requirements are met.

To effectively organise the PMA working day for self and others, making the best use of time and resources.

Where appropriate, to be involved in networking with appropriate training and academic institutes regarding current and contemporary practice. Assist in the development of appropriate training programmes.

To assist with the audit and evaluation of training in the prevention and management of aggression, reporting this to the PMA Team Lead.

Ensure up to date knowledge and understanding of mental health issues in relation to PMA

Attending appropriate meetings. Use available resources effectively. To follow all policies pertaining to PMA and provide comment on proposals for change.

Participate in recruitment, selection and induction of junior staff as required.

Be aware of personal limitations and role boundaries.

Ensure that personal appearance, practice, and manner conform to the standards and expectations of the Trust and Restraint Reduction Network and are in accordance with the NMC of code of professional conduct or equivalent.

To fully participate in own appraisals and professional development plans, clearly linking them to their own training needs.

To disseminate and impact same to colleagues, through a variety of methods.

Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with service users, staff and carers when in clinical areas.

Attend statutory and mandatory training required for the role, maintaining compliance by completing updates as required by the Trust and identified in PDP/Appraisals.

To utilise knowledge and skills obtained through further training.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse or equivalent.
  • Hold a current teaching qualification or equivalent eg Award in Education and Training (AET)
Experience
  • Experience in the delivery of training including PMA
  • Experience of working in a MDT
Skills
  • Reasonable confidence and competence in using IT systems (e.g. Outlook, ESR, Lorenzo, Word, clinical or other record systems) relevant to the role. Ability to manage own time and priorities effectively and appropriately.
  • Effective communication, presentation and group management skills.

Knowledge
  • Up to date knowledge of PMA.
