Jobbeschreibung

Essex Highways is responsible for managing and maintaining one of the largest highway networks in the country: 5,000 miles of roads and around 5,000 miles of footways. Essex Highways is a delivery partnership between Essex County Council and our contractual partner.

As a Highways Inspector, you will deliver a safe, sustainable, and effective highway network for all road users by way of routine Monthly, Quarterly and Annual inspections. Routine inspections of the network are to identify defects which meet our investigatory levels as outlined in the maintenance strategy. All identified issues are then risk assessed and logged onto a mobile capture device.

The Role

· Responsible for carrying out inspections and recording the condition of the public highway to ensure it is maintained to a standard acceptable to the Highways Authority
· Responsible for raising defects using data capture devices to enable the delivery teams or utilities to plan and prioritise work accordingly, that meet the appropriate Essex County Council policies
· Responsible for providing advice, guidance and information to stakeholders, partners and customers. Responding to complaints, including guiding customers if no action is to be taken
· Responsible for identifying sites of accident claims, checking works history and specification for safety compliance.

Preparing documentation and attending court hearings to give evidence as a professional witness, to enable resolutions to be fully informed
· Specific individual and shared targets and objectives are defined annually within the performance management framework

• Provide practical advice and solutions to problems and ensure that tasks are followed through, loose ends are tied up and the job is completed.
• Be persistent in problem solving, seeking solutions through the expertise of both self and others, researching the facts with care and resolving problems in a timely and thorough manner.
• Give support and care in terms of both practical advice and action in areas where competence, knowledge and experience are needed.
• Develop competences and expertise in both self and others in order to gain a satisfactory standard and deliver results within agreed timescales.
• Evaluate situations, calculate risks whilst justifying and defending correctness.
• Use researched factual information when solving problems and apply logic when handling conflict.
• Adopt an accommodating and helpful manner, debate, agree and where necessary accept the objectives set by others and work within agreed parameters in order to ensuring tasks are complete.
• Adopt a serious and questioning manner in order to assess situations and come to conclusions, thus basing the process on facts and information gleaned from others.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to build strong partnerships with contractors, Members and the public.
• Inspections are carried out either by walking or by car, as defined by the Councils policies.
