Specialist Speech & Language Therapist

£35,392 to £42,618 DOE, pro rata

To work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing speech and language therapy (SaLT) for individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI), leading SaLT provision within the service and liaising with professionals, families, and clients.

1. Apply neurobehavioural approaches to brain injury, demonstrating current research knowledge and best practices.
2. Manage a caseload of clients with complex needs and/or challenging behaviour.
3. Use evidence-based, client-centred practice for assessment, planning, and intervention.
4. Conduct comprehensive assessments considering environment and future plans to develop appropriate goals, care plans, and therapy programs.
5. Overcome communication barriers to engage clients and obtain informed consent, working within legal frameworks when necessary.
6. Seek consent and advocate for clients, respecting confidentiality.
7. Provide information about communication abilities and support needs.
8. Perform swallowing assessments, develop recommendations, and train staff in dysphagia management.
9. Ensure compliance with risk management and safeguarding responsibilities.
10. Complete risk assessments and promote health and safety.
11. Maintain equipment and inventory, reporting needs to the manager.
12. Maintain HCPC registration and professional portfolio.

• Work independently and creatively as a clinical professional.
• Develop collaborative relationships and lead service development.
• Participate in clinical governance and quality assurance.

• Engage in research or audit projects relevant to speech therapy.
• Participate in service improvement initiatives.

• Support learning and training of staff, clients, and families.
• Engage in supervision and professional development.

• Degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
• Registered with HCPC.
• Achieved Dysphagia Competencies.
• Experience in hospital or residential settings.
• Knowledge of SaLT models for ABI, including social and cognitive communication.
• Experience with speech and language outcome measures.
• At least 4 years of complex case management experience.
• Minimum 2 years working with adults with neurological conditions or equivalent post-registration experience.
