Job description

We are looking for a dedicated, compassionate and enthusiastic Youth Mentor to join a primary school based in Cheltenham and provide targeted support to pupils who may benefit from additional guidance, encouragement and positive relationships.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers, build confidence and achieve their potential. The successful candidate will work closely with pupils, staff and families to provide both individual and small-group mentoring support.

As a Youth Mentor, you will play an important role in supporting pupils' social, emotional and personal development. You will build positive relationships with pupils and provide a safe, consistent and supportive presence within the school.

A key part of the role will involve working with some pupils on a 1:1 basis, helping them to develop strategies to manage challenges, improve their engagement with school and build their confidence.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Providing 1:1 mentoring and support to identified pupils.
  • Building positive, trusting and professional relationships with young people.
  • Supporting pupils who may experience difficulties with confidence, behaviour, emotional regulation, attendance or engagement.
  • Helping pupils develop their self-esteem, resilience, communication and social skills.
  • Providing encouragement and positive role modelling.
  • Supporting pupils to identify their strengths, set achievable goals and recognise their progress.
  • Working alongside teachers, pastoral staff, SEND staff and other professionals to provide consistent support.
  • Supporting pupils during lessons, social times and other parts of the school day where appropriate.
  • Delivering or supporting small-group mentoring activities.
  • Maintaining appropriate records of mentoring sessions and pupil progress.
  • Contributing to a positive, inclusive and nurturing school environment.
  • Following safeguarding, child protection and school policies at all times.

Previous experience of working with children or young people in a school, youth work, pastoral, mentoring, care or support setting would be desirable. Relevant qualifications or experience will be considered.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
