Windows Engineer – 12 Month Contract

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Windows Engineer to join a Digital Excellence function delivering critical IT services to the business. This hands-on role supports highly secure Windows infrastructure and workplace environments across restricted networks classified at Secret level and above. You will work across business-as-usual support, administration, configuration, maintenance, incident resolution, monitoring and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will be a versatile Windows generalist who is comfortable operating across both infrastructure and workplace technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide operational support, administration and configuration management across secure Windows infrastructure and workplace environments.
- Plan and coordinate maintenance, patching and authorised changes, minimising disruption to live services.
- Maintain accurate inventory records, asset registers, technical documentation and knowledge-base articles.
- Resolve Windows-related incidents and service requests within agreed SLAs, acting as Tier 2/Tier 3 support and following appropriate escalation processes.
- Support high-severity incidents by coordinating with incident and technical managers, investigating issues and implementing remediation.
- Identify root causes of recurring incidents, conduct lessons-learned activities and help deliver sustainable improvements.
- Monitor secure networks and systems, respond proactively to alerts and implement threshold- or health-based remediation.
- Monitor and optimise server and network performance, security and backup services.
- Ensure services comply with security guidance, agreed controls and recognised best practice.
- Liaise with third-party service providers for troubleshooting, technical support and network management, providing technical guidance where required.
- Raise key issues, changes and service topics at relevant meetings.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and maintain a strong working knowledge of the wider IT environment.
- Keep abreast of developments, products, practices and trends across Windows technologies.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Active DV clearance
- Proven experience as a Windows Engineer in secure or highly controlled environments.
- Broad, hands-on capability across both infrastructure and workplace technologies.
- Strong knowledge of Windows Server, Windows operating systems and desktop applications.
- In-depth experience with virtualisation platforms, including VDI.
- Experience supporting storage solutions, Active Directory and access management.
- Sound understanding of networking principles.
- Excellent diagnostic, troubleshooting and problem-resolution skills.
- Experience of incident, problem and change management within SLA-driven services.
- Clear communication, documentation and stakeholder-management skills.
