Job summary

World Class Defence Organisation is seeking 2x Windows Engineer subcontractors in Stevenage on a 12‑month contract. The role requires DV clearance and operates 37 hours per week, with overtime at time and a quarter.

The assignment is Inside IR35 (Umbrella) with a 12-month initial duration. Responsibilities include BAU support, patching coordination, incident resolution across restricted networks, and documenting knowledge bases.

Qualifications

• Must hold DV clearance.
• Experienced Windows Engineer with capability across Infrastructure & Workplace.
• Hands-on expertise in Windows Server, Windows OS and Desktop Apps; knowledge of VDI and storage.

Responsibilities

• Provide operational BAU support and configuration management across Windows environments.
• Maintain knowledge of the business IT environment and ensure minimal disruption to operations.
• Plan and coordinate maintenance and patching across Windows Environments in restricted networks.
• Manage incidents related to Windows services and respond within SLAs.
• Coordinate with incident and technical managers during high-severity incidents.
• Assist in root cause analysis and long-term fixes as part of continuous improvement.
• Maintain and close incidents and requests per SLA; stay current with Windows tech trends.
• Interface with 3rd party providers for support and guidance.

Location: Stevenage

Contract:37 Hours per week

Overtime: Hours worked over 37 hours per week will be calculated at 'time and a quarter'

Windows Engineer Job Description:

Digital Excellence function providing IT Services to the business.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide operational BAU support, administration & configuration management across Infrastructure and Workplace Windows Environments in restricted secret & above networks.
2. Responsible for maintaining a good working knowledge of the business IT environment.
3. Planning & coordinating maintenance and patching across the Windows Environments in restricted secret & above networks.
4. Access & implement changes to the restricted Windows Environment, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
5. Creation, maintenance & audit of inventory information and asset registers as required.
6. Creation, maintenance & review of comprehensive, high-quality documentation as required.
7. Creation & maintenance of standard problem resolution & fix documentation, to ensure any technical knowledge bases are kept are up to date.
8. Responsible for resolution of incidents related to Windows Services across restricted secret & above networks in line with agreed SLAs, following escalation processes as appropriate.
9. Acting as Tier 2 / Tier 3 support for Windows related issues & problem resolution, performing incident response, investigation & remediation within SLA timeframes.
10. Co-ordinate with incident & Technical managers, following incident management process during high-severity incidents.
11. Identify underlying root causes of reoccurring incidents, assisting in implementation of long-term solutions.
12. Actively participate in lessons learned activities, conducting thorough root cause analysis, and documenting findings, as part of continuous improvement cycle.
13. Responsible for ensuring update and closure of all incidents & requests assigned to team queue in accordance to SLA.
14. Stay current with any developments in Windows technologies, products, practices and trends.
15. Support with monitoring and alerting across restricted secret & above networks. Responding proactively to alerts & implementing threshold and health-based remediation actions as appropriate.
16. Monitor and optimise network/server performance, security, and backups.
17. Ensure compliance with security guidance and best practice in line with adopted security postures.
18. Interface with agreed 3rd party service providers for assistance & technical support, troubleshooting and network management and also to provide technical guidance to the 3rd party suppliers.
19. Bring forward key issues, changes & topics to service meetings for discussion.
20. Participate in Cross-functional Team Collaboration as required.
21. 100% site-based role due to nature of network.

Skillset/experience required:

• Must hold DV clearance.
• Experienced Windows Engineer, must be a generalist with ability to work comfortably across both Infrastructure & Workplace.
• Hands on skills & in-depth expertise across Windows Server, Windows OS, and Desktop Applications, Virtualisation Platforms including VDI, Storage Solutions, AD & Access Management. Knowledge of networking principles, and excellent troubleshooting skills.
