Job summary

South Staffordshire Water, operating Cambridge Water and South Staffs Water, seeks a Network Controller in Cambridge to monitor and control the water distribution network. Network Controller

Salary: £30,000 per annum | Company Benefits | Shift Allowance

Location: Fulborn Road, Cambridge

Contract: Full-Time | Permanent | 37.5 hours per week | 24 hour shift coverage required

South Staffordshire Water operates across two regions as Cambridge Water and South Staffs Water, and is a privately-owned regulated water only company.

South Staffs Water supplies a population of nearly 1.3 million. The area of supply stretches from the edge of Ashbourne in the North, to Halesowen in the South, and from Burton-on-Trent in the East, to Kinver in the West.

The Role

As a Network Controller, you'll play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our water supply and distribution network. Working within our Customer Operations Hub, you'll monitor network performance in real time, respond to operational alarms and incidents, coordinate out-of-hours activities, and help maintain a reliable water service for our customers. You'll work closely with operational teams, duty managers and field-based colleagues to protect water quality, maintain security, and minimise interruptions to supply.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor water supply and distribution systems using SCADA, data logging and network visualisation systems.
  • Respond to operational and security alarms in line with company procedures and escalation processes.
  • Manage water movements across the network to maintain supply and protect water quality.
  • Coordinate out-of-hours call-outs for operational teams, contractors and duty managers.
  • Identify and report network abnormalities, incidents and emerging risks.
  • Support planned outages and authorised operational activities while ensuring customer impacts are minimised.
  • Raise and assign work orders to support operational response activities.
  • Escalate incidents and emergencies in accordance with company procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with customer service teams to provide timely customer communications and updates
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying recurring issues and opportunities to enhance network performance.
What You'll Need
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to engage with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Good IT skills and confidence using multiple systems simultaneously.
  • A proactive and customer-focused approach to problem solving and decision making.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure and respond effectively to incidents and emergencies.
  • Strong teamwork skills combined with the ability to work independently and make decisions when working alone.
  • A reliable and flexible approach to supporting a 24/7 operational environment.
  • Experience of SCADA, telemetry or data monitoring systems would be advantageous but is not essential.
