Job summary

Biffa is seeking a Transport Manager to oversee a 45+ vehicle fleet at our Southampton Depot. Monday–Friday (37.5 hours) with flexible start and finish times to match operational needs.

You will lead traffic dispatchers and drivers, ensure compliance with transport, environmental, and health & safety rules, manage KPIs, and drive service, safety and profitability. The role emphasizes cost control, customer service, and close collaboration with the fleet team.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in traffic or logistics management in unionised, multi-shift environments.
• Strong knowledge of transport, environmental and health & safety legislation with KPIs and lean methods.
• International CPC, strong commercial acumen, and excellent communication and planning abilities.
• Willingness to travel across the UK.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and clear work instructions to traffic dispatchers, drivers and operatives, review depot KPIs and drive improvements in service, safety and profitability.
• Manage vehicle operations, ensuring vehicles are used safely, wheel security requirements are met and gross weight limits are adhered to, while liaising with the fleet team to ensure seamless operations.
• Ensure adherence to transport and environmental legislation, including the management of third-party insurance claims.
• Support cost control initiatives, drive operational efficiency and identify opportunities to reduce costs and exceed budget expectations.
• Enforce Health and Safety procedures, including near-miss reporting and emergency procedures, and review near-miss reports to maintain a first-class customer experience.
• Complete all role-related administrative tasks, including worksheets and tachograph records.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external customers through proactive and effective communication.

The Transport Manager will efficiently and effectively manage a fleet of 45+ vehicles at our Southampton Depot.

The role will also assist with managing the day-to-day operations of the Traffic Office, ensuring health and safety, environmental and operator licence compliance, while delivering first-class customer service.

• Proven experience in traffic or logistics management, including resource management, cost control and operational leadership within unionised, multi-shift environments.
• In-depth understanding of transport, environmental and health and safety legislation, with strong knowledge of lean methodology and KPIs.
• International CPC, strong commercial acumen, excellent communication and planning abilities.
• Familiarity with the local area and willingness to travel for business needs across the UK.
