Job summary

Biffa Waste Services in Welham Green is seeking an experienced Transport Manager to efficiently operate a fleet of 8+ vehicles and oversee the Traffic Office daily.

You will lead dispatchers and drivers, ensure safety, compliance, and KPI delivery while driving cost control and customer service. The role requires CPC, strong leadership, and willingness to travel across the UK; a competitive salary and pension await.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in traffic or logistics management within multi‑shift environments.
• In-depth understanding of transport, environmental and health and safety legislation with strong KPI knowledge.
• International CPC, strong commercial acumen, excellent communication and planning abilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and instructions to traffic dispatchers, drivers and operatives; review depot KPIs and drive improvements.
• Manage vehicle operations, ensure safe vehicle use, wheel security, and adherence to gross weight limits; liaise with fleet team for seamless operations.
• Ensure compliance with transport and environmental legislation; manage third‑party insurance claims.
• Support cost control initiatives, drive operational efficiency and identify opportunities to reduce costs and meet budgets.
• Enforce Health and Safety procedures including near‑miss reporting and emergency procedures; review near‑miss reports for customer experience.
• Complete role‑related administrative tasks including worksheets and tachograph records.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external customers through proactive communication.

A quick look at the role

The Transport Manager will efficiently and effectively manage a fleet of 8+ vehicles at our Welham Green Depot.

The role will also assist with managing the day-to-day operations of the Traffic Office, ensuring health and safety, environmental and operator licence compliance, while delivering first-class customer service.

Your core responsibilities

• Provide leadership and clear work instructions to traffic dispatchers, drivers and operatives, review depot KPIs and drive improvements in service, safety and profitability.
• Manage vehicle operations, ensuring vehicles are used safely, wheel security requirements are met and gross weight limits are adhered to, while liaising with the fleet team to ensure seamless operations.
• Ensure adherence to transport and environmental legislation, including the management of third-party insurance claims.
• Support cost control initiatives, drive operational efficiency and identify opportunities to reduce costs and exceed budget expectations.
• Enforce Health and Safety procedures, including near-miss reporting and emergency procedures, and review near-miss reports to maintain a first-class customer experience.
• Complete all role-related administrative tasks, including worksheets and tachograph records.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external customers through proactive and effective communication.

Our essential requirements

• Proven experience in traffic or logistics management, including resource management, cost control and operational leadership within unionised, multi-shift environments.
• In-depth understanding of transport, environmental and health and safety legislation, with strong knowledge of lean methodology and KPIs.
• International CPC, strong commercial acumen, excellent communication and planning abilities.
• Familiarity with the local area and willingness to travel for business needs across the UK.
