Job summary

Biffa Southampton Depot is seeking a Transport Manager to lead a fleet of 45+ vehicles and oversee day-to-day Traffic Office operations, ensuring safety, regulatory compliance and first-class customer service.

You will manage dispatchers and drivers, drive KPI improvements, control costs, enforce HSE rules and maintain accurate tachographs and records. This role requires strong leadership and UK-wide travel as needed.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in traffic or logistics management with operational leadership.
• In-depth knowledge of transport, environmental and health-and-safety legislation.
• Strong commercial acumen and planning abilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and clear work instructions to traffic dispatchers, drivers and operatives, review depot KPIs and drive improvements in service, safety and profitability.
• Manage vehicle operations, ensuring vehicles are used safely and meeting weight limits, liaising with fleet team for seamless operations.
• Ensure adherence to transport and environmental legislation and manage third-party insurance claims.
• Support cost control initiatives, drive operational efficiency and identify cost-saving opportunities.
• Enforce Health and Safety procedures and review near-miss reports to maintain a first-class customer experience.
• Complete administrative tasks including worksheets and tachograph records.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external customers through proactive communication.

Transport Manager

A quick look at the role

The Transport Manager will efficiently and effectively manage a fleet of 45+ vehicles at our Southampton Depot.

The role will also assist with managing the day-to-day operations of the Traffic Office, ensuring health and safety, environmental and operator licence compliance, while delivering first-class customer service.

Your core responsibilities

• Provide leadership and clear work instructions to traffic dispatchers, drivers and operatives, review depot KPIs and drive improvements in service, safety and profitability.


• Manage vehicle operations, ensuring vehicles are used safely, wheel security requirements are met and gross weight limits are adhered to, while liaising with the fleet team to ensure seamless operations.


• Ensure adherence to transport and environmental legislation, including the management of third-party insurance claims.


• Support cost control initiatives, drive operational efficiency and identify opportunities to reduce costs and exceed budget expectations.


• Enforce Health and Safety procedures, including near-miss reporting and emergency procedures, and review near-miss reports to maintain a first-class customer experience.


• Complete all role-related administrative tasks, including worksheets and tachograph records.


• Build and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external customers through proactive and effective communication.

Our essential requirements

• Proven experience in traffic or logistics management, including resource management, cost control and operational leadership within unionised, multi-shift environments.


• In-depth understanding of transport, environmental and health and safety legislation, with strong knowledge of lean methodology and KPIs.


• International CPC, strong commercial acumen, excellent communication and planning abilities.


• Familiarity with the local area and willingness to travel for business needs across the UK.
