Job summary

Biffa Waste Services is seeking a Transport Manager to oversee a fleet of 45+ vehicles at the Southampton Depot and run day‑to‑day traffic office operations. You’ll ensure safety, compliance and excellent customer service while leading dispatchers, drivers and operatives.

The role requires strong leadership, KPI oversight and knowledge of transport legislation. You’ll engage with the fleet team to optimise efficiency and cost controls across multiple shifts.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in traffic or logistics management within unionised, multi‑shift environments.
• Experience with cost control and operational leadership.
• Familiarity with transport, environmental and health and safety legislation.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and clear work instructions to traffic dispatchers, drivers and operatives, review depot KPIs and drive improvements in service, safety and profitability.
• Manage vehicle operations, ensuring safety, wheel security and gross weight limits, coordinating with fleet team.
• Ensure adherence to transport and environmental legislation, including third‑party insurance claims.
• Support cost control initiatives, drive operational efficiency and identify cost reduction opportunities.
• Enforce Health and Safety procedures, review near‑miss reports, and maintain first‑class customer experience.
• Complete all role‑related administrative tasks, including tachograph records.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external customers through proactive communication.

The Transport Manager will efficiently and effectively manage a fleet of 45+ vehicles at our Southampton Depot.

The role will also assist with managing the day-to-day operations of the Traffic Office, ensuring health and safety, environmental and operator licence compliance, while delivering first-class customer service.

Your core responsibilities

• Provide leadership and clear work instructions to traffic dispatchers, drivers and operatives, review depot KPIs and drive improvements in service, safety and profitability.
• Manage vehicle operations, ensuring vehicles are used safely, wheel security requirements are met and gross weight limits are adhered to, while liaising with the fleet team to ensure seamless operations.
• Ensure adherence to transport and environmental legislation, including the management of third-party insurance claims.
• Support cost control initiatives, drive operational efficiency and identify opportunities to reduce costs and exceed budget expectations.
• Enforce Health and Safety procedures, including near-miss reporting and emergency procedures, and review near-miss reports to maintain a first-class customer experience.
• Complete all role-related administrative tasks, including worksheets and tachograph records.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external customers through proactive and effective communication.

Our essential requirements

• Proven experience in traffic or logistics management, including resource management, cost control and operational leadership within unionised, multi-shift environments.
• In-depth understanding of transport, environmental and health and safety legislation, with strong knowledge of lean methodology and KPIs.
• International CPC, strong commercial acumen, excellent communication and planning abilities.
• Familiarity with the local area and willingness to travel for business needs across the UK.
