Job summary

City of Doncaster Council is seeking a Traffic Signals & Control Engineer to join the Safer Roads team. This role focuses on the design, operation and development of traffic signal infrastructure and ITS across the city, coordinating with internal departments and external partners.

You will manage signal assets, develop timings, and support capital highway projects, with a strong emphasis on safety, efficiency and standards compliance. Hybrid work from the Civic Office is available.

Qualifications

• Experience in the design, operation or maintenance of traffic signal systems.
• Knowledge of traffic signal control technology including UTC, MOVA and SCOOT.
• Understanding of legislation, standards and guidance for traffic signals and highway operations.

Responsibilities

• Managing maintenance, inspection and performance of traffic signal installations.
• Designing and commissioning new traffic signal and pedestrian crossing schemes.
• Developing signal timings and traffic management strategies to improve network performance.
• Supporting ITS and city-wide traffic system deployments.
• Managing contracts and suppliers involved in signal maintenance and upgrades.
• Investigating congestion and road safety concerns and advising stakeholders.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Traffic Signals & Control Engineer to join our signals team within Safer Roads. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the design, maintenance, operation and development of traffic signal infrastructure and intelligent transport systems across the city.

Working as part of a dedicated signals team, you will help deliver safer, more efficient journeys for all road users while supporting wider transport, regeneration and sustainability objectives.

As Traffic Signals & Control Engineer, you will be responsible for managing and developing traffic signal assets and associated control systems, ensuring they operate safely, efficiently and in compliance with relevant legislation and standards.

Key responsibilities include:

• Managing the maintenance, inspection and performance of traffic signal installations.
• Designing and commissioning new traffic signal and pedestrian crossing schemes.
• Developing signal timings and traffic management strategies to improve network performance.
• Supporting the introduction and operation of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
• Managing contracts and external suppliers involved in signal maintenance and upgrades.
• Investigating traffic congestion, road safety concerns and customer enquiries.
• Providing technical advice to internal departments, developers and external stakeholders.
• Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, standards and best practice guidance.
• Supporting the delivery of capital and revenue highway projects.

We are looking for a motivated professional with a strong technical background in traffic signals and highway network management with the following experience:

• Experience in the design, operation or maintenance of traffic signal systems.

• Knowledge of traffic signal control technology, including UTC, MOVA and SCOOT.
• Experience of using industry-standard traffic signal design software.
• Understanding of relevant legislation, standards and guidance relating to traffic signals and highway operations.
• Strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively with stakeholders.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Professional membership of a relevant institution (CIHT, IHE, ICE or similar).
• Experience of Intelligent Transport Systems and Urban Traffic Control systems.
• Traffic signal design, testing and commissioning.
• Project management experience within a local authority or consultancy environment.
