Job summary

Sussex Council is seeking an experienced Tenancy Relations Officer on a part-time interim basis in West Sussex. The role is 3 days per week, with approximately 1 day on site and the remaining time worked remotely.

You will provide advice on tenancy relations, apply legislative knowledge under the Renters' Rights Act, and support tenants and landlords through sensitive tenancy matters. Collaboration with Environmental Health / Private Sector Housing is required.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of tenancy relations and housing legislation.
  • Experience handling landlord/tenant disputes.
  • Experience within a Local Authority, Private Sector Housing or similar environment.
  • Awareness of enforcement processes and Renters' Rights Act principles.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and support on tenancy relations matters, including landlord and tenant disputes.
  • Apply a strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, particularly Renters' Rights Act.
  • Undertake tenancy-related enforcement work where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Environmental Health / Private Sector Housing teams as needed.
  • Communicate confidently with tenants, landlords and internal/external stakeholders.
  • Help ensure cases are handled fairly and in accordance with current legislation.

Tenancy Relations Officer

Sussex Council

£25-£35 per hour

3 days per week (1 day on site)

Initial interim contract

We are working with a council in West Sussex who are looking to appoint an experienced Tenancy Relations Officer on a part-time interim basis.

This is a 3-day-per-week role, with approximately 1 day per week required on site and the remaining time worked remotely.

With the Renters' Rights Act still relatively new, the council is looking for someone who can bring strong legislative knowledge, excellent interpersonal skills and the confidence to support tenants and landlords through potentially sensitive tenancy-related matters.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide advice and support on tenancy relations matters, including landlord and tenant disputes.
  • Apply a strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, particularly Sections (Apply online only).
  • Undertake tenancy-related enforcement work where appropriate.
  • Work closely with the council's Environmental Health / Private Sector Housing team, acting as a conduit between services where cases require technical or enforcement input.
  • Communicate confidently with tenants, landlords, internal teams and external organisations.
  • Help ensure cases are handled fairly, professionally and in accordance with current legislation.
About you
  • Strong knowledge of tenancy relations and relevant housing legislation.
  • Experience dealing with sensitive landlord and tenant situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills.
  • Experience within a Local Authority, Private Sector Housing or similar environment.
  • An understanding of enforcement processes, although this is not purely a technical PSH Officer position.
  • Knowledge of, or an affiliation with, Justice for Tenants would be advantageous.This could be a great opportunity for an experienced Tenancy Relations Officer looking for a flexible, part-time contract where they can help shape the council's approach as the new legislation develops.
