Job summary

Abingdon and Witney College is seeking an Equine Technician to support the operation, maintenance and development of our Common Leys Farm campus in Witney. The role focuses on horse care, safety and practical land management to support teaching, learning, and commercial activities.

The position involves a range of duties across horse welfare, maintenance of buildings and infrastructure, and collaboration with farm teams. Part-time, 26 hours/week, with weekend work as part of the rota.

Qualifications

• Experience working practically with horses or within the equine industry.
• Strong practical skills and the ability to work safely with a wide range of horses and related tools and equipment.
• Good understanding of health and safety requirements in a practical working environment.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a high standard of horse care and welfare.
• Carry out routine maintenance and repairs to farm and equine buildings and estate infrastructure.
• Support upkeep and presentation of the equine unit to a high standard.
• Supervise duty students when carrying out equine duties on the yard.
• Assist with maintenance, servicing and safe operation of equine equipment and facilities.
• Undertake practical land management activities including basic repairs (e.g., fencing).
• Support delivery of equine practicals within the curriculum.
• Maintain safe working practices and compliance with health and safety requirements.
• Assist with stock checks and maintenance records.
• Work with teaching staff to support learning activities and commercial farm operations.
• Respond to day-to-day equine issues and help ensure smooth yard operation.

Salary: £25,458 - £26,290 per annum (pro-rata £17,889 - £18,474)

We are seeking a dedicated Technician (Equine) to support the effective operation, maintenance and ongoing development of our Common Leys Farm campus. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in ensuring that our equine yard and horses remain safe, well looked after and fit for purpose, supporting teaching, learning, commercial activities and the long-term sustainability of the equine enterprise.

About the Role

As an Equine Technician, you will undertake a wide range of equine and land management duties across the farm and associated facilities. Working closely with colleagues across the college and farm teams, you will help create a safe and productive environment for students, staff and visitors.

This is a varied role that offers the opportunity to apply practical skills across horse care and welfare, estate maintenance, land management and infrastructure development.

Key Responsibilities

• Work within the equine team to maintain a high standard of horse care and welfare.


• Carry out routine maintenance and repairs to farm and equine buildings, fencing, gates, tracks and estate infrastructure.


• Support the upkeep and presentation of the equine unit to a high standard.


• Supervise duty students when carrying out equine duties on the yard.


• Assist with the maintenance, servicing and safe operation of equine equipment, facilities and tools.


• Undertake practical land management activities including field maintenance and basic repairs (e.g fencing).


• Support the delivery of equine practicals within the equine curriculum.


• Maintain safe working practices and ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.


• Assist with stock control, equipment checks and maintenance records.


• Work collaboratively with teaching staff and farm teams to support learning activities and commercial farm operations.


• Respond to day-to-day equine issues and help ensure the smooth operation of the yard.


• Work weekends/bank holidays as part of the equine team rota.

About You

We are looking for a proactive and reliable individual who loves horses, enjoys practical work, takes pride in maintaining high standards and can work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Essential Requirements

• Relevant Level 3 qualification or equivalent practical experience.


• Experience in working practically with horses or within the wider equine industry.


• Strong practical skills and the ability to work with a wide range of horses and related tools, machinery and equipment safely.


• Good understanding of health and safety requirements within a practical working environment.


• Excellent organisational and communication skills.


• Ability to prioritise workloads and use initiative to solve problems.


• Full UK driving licence.
