Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is seeking a Site Based Substation Construction Manager for our Power Transmission and Distribution team in the Middlesbrough area. You will support project managers to safeguard profitability while upholding safety, sustainability and quality standards.

You will lead site engineers, plan resources, supervise labour and subcontractors, and ensure timely delivery within budget. A strong background in electrical/civil disciplines and a UK driving licence are essential.

Qualifications

  • Track record of project delivery.
  • Experience on National Grid projects.
  • Understanding of standard contracts.
  • Proficient in commercial/project management communications.
  • Experience implementing safe systems of work.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Degree in Electrical/Civil Engineering desirable.
  • APM qualification desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Site Engineers to ensure safety and policy compliance.
  • Plan work and arrange materials, plant, and equipment.
  • Oversee resources and manage project staff.
  • Control construction site activities and perform quality checks.
  • Liaise with Highways Authorities, Local Authorities and utilities.
  • Ensure on-time and on-budget delivery and monitor progress.

As aConstruction Manageryou'll:

  • Support the Project Managers in their responsibility for overall profit and lossof a standard or major project whilst ensuring the highest standards of safety, sustainability,environmental and quality are implemented
  • Promote a collaborative working environment which ensures client, internal and other stakeholders’ requirements are effectively managed, and employees feel motivated and engaged to deliver
What you'll be doing
  • Manage Site Engineers / Project Engineers to ensure that all work undertaken satisfies all required safety and technical policies and procedures
  • Plan the work and oversee the requirements for necessary materials, plant and equipment
  • Oversee the requirements for resource and then manage staff for the project
  • Manage the construction site(s) on a day-to-day basis, including supervising the labour force, monitoring subcontractors, checking materials, inspecting work and overseeing quality control
  • Ensure that all work is carried out according to required standards and be responsible for effective liaison and collaboration with Highways Authorities, Local Authorities and other Utilities providers etc.
  • Ensure the project is delivered on time and on budget by setting benchmarks, agreeing budgets and monitoring progress
  • Check design documents
  • Responsible for a working environment which ensures the achievement of all safety and environment legislation, engineering and customer standards.
Who we're looking for

The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Able to demonstrate a track record of project delivery
  • Experience working in a similar role ideally with expertise of working on National Grid projects
  • Good understanding of the standard forms of contracts
  • Proficient in commercial/project management communications
  • Experience in implementing safe systems of work
  • Experience in improving current safety systems in support of our safety initiatives - making safety personal
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbal and written with all levels of theorganisation
  • Effective team management skills which empower, influence & inspire others to build effective teams.
  • Providing mentoring and support to members of the team where required
  • Commercially astute
  • Full clean UK driving licence
  • Degree Qualified in Electrical/Civil Engineering Discipline -desirable
  • Qualification in APM –desirable
