Job summary

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Site Based Substation Construction Manager for our Power Transmission & Distribution work around the Middlesbrough area. You will lead site teams, ensure safety and contract compliance, and drive project delivery on key substations.

In this role you will coordinate resources, manage construction activities daily, liaise with authorities and utilities, and uphold quality and safety standards while delivering on time and within budget.

Qualifications

  • Track record of delivering projects.
  • Experience on National Grid projects or similar utilities.
  • Understanding of standard contract forms.
  • Strong commercial/project management communications.
  • Experience implementing safe work systems.
  • Experience improving safety systems and initiatives.
  • Proven verbal and written communication across all levels.
  • Effective mentoring and team leadership.
  • Commercially astute and driving licenced.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Site Engineers/Project Engineers to ensure safety and policy compliance.
  • Plan work and oversee materials, plant and equipment.
  • Oversee resource requirements and manage project staff.
  • Manage construction sites daily, supervise labor, monitor subcontractors, inspect work.
  • Ensure standards, liaise with Highways Authorities, Local Authorities and utilities.
  • Deliver project on time and on budget; set benchmarks and monitor progress.
  • Check design documents for accuracy and feasibility.
  • Maintain safe working environment and compliance with legislation.

About the role

Join our Power Transmission and Distribution team as a Site Based Substation Construction Manager within our Operational Team. You will deliver complex work that really matters to our business, and the world around you. You will be working on our projects in the Middlesbrough area.

What you'll be doing
  • Manage Site Engineers / Project Engineers to ensure that all work undertaken satisfies all required safety and technical policies and procedures
  • Plan the work and oversee the requirements for necessary materials, plant and equipment
  • Oversee the requirements for resource and then manage staff for the project
  • Manage the construction site(s) on a day-to-day basis, including supervising the labour force, monitoring subcontractors, checking materials, inspecting work and overseeing quality control
  • Ensure that all work is carried out according to required standards and be responsible for effective liaison and collaboration with Highways Authorities, Local Authorities and other Utilities providers etc.
  • Ensure the project is delivered on time and on budget by setting benchmarks, agreeing budgets and monitoring progress
  • Check design documents
  • Responsible for a working environment which ensures the achievement of all safety and environment legislation, engineering and customer standards.
Who we're looking for
  • Able to demonstrate a track record of project delivery
  • Experience working in a similar role ideally with expertise of working on National Grid projects
  • Good understanding of the standard forms of contracts
  • Proficient in commercial/project management communications
  • Experience in implementing safe systems of work
  • Experience in improving current safety systems in support of our safety initiatives - making safety personal
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbal and written with all levels of the organisation
  • Effective team management skills which empower, influence & inspire others to build effective teams.
  • Providing mentoring and support to members of the team where required
  • Commercially astute
  • Full clean UK driving licence
  • Degree Qualified in Electrical/Civil Engineering Discipline - desirable
  • Qualification in APM – desirable
