Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is hiring an experienced Construction Manager (Substations) in Woolavington. You will manage teams to ensure the successful delivery of critical infrastructure projects while maintaining safety and quality standards.

About the Role

Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission & Distribution team is growing—and we’re looking for an experienced Construction Manager (Substations) to help shape the future of critical UK infrastructure. If you’re passionate about delivering excellence in construction, leading high-performing teams, and driving safe, sustainable outcomes, we want to hear from you.

What you'll be doing
  • Manage Site Engineers / Project Engineers to ensure that all work undertaken satisfies all required safety and technical policies and procedures.
  • Plan the work and oversee the requirements for necessary materials, plant and equipment.
  • Oversee the requirements for resource and then manage staff for the project.
  • Manage the construction site(s) on a day-to-day basis, including supervising the labour force, monitoring subcontractors, checking materials, inspecting work and overseeing quality control.
  • Ensure that all work is carried out according to required standards and be responsible for effective liaison and collaboration with Highways Authorities, Local Authorities and other Utilities providers etc.
  • Ensure the project is delivered on time and on budget by setting benchmarks, agreeing budgets and monitoring progress.
  • Check design documents.
  • Responsible for a working environment which ensures the achievement of all safety and environment legislation, engineering and customer standards.

  • Able to demonstrate a track record of project delivery
  • Good understanding of the standard forms of contracts
  • Proficient in commercial/project management communications
  • Experience in implementing safe systems of work
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbal and written with all levels of the organisation
  • Effective team management skills which empower, influence & inspire others to build effective teams. Providing mentoring and support to members of the team where required
  • Commercially astute
  • Able to undertake work in high pressure situations
  • Good knowledge of performance evaluation techniques and key metrics
  • Record of a solution-based approach to problem solving
  • Ability to see the business vision and inspire this shared vision amongst the team
  • Communications – Verbally, Written, Presenting
  • Communicate and check understanding of daily briefings
  • Two way communication eg brief out weekly safety pack
  • Discuss ideas and plans competently and with confidence
  • Communicate new concepts and ideas to technical and non-technical stakeholders

The Following Qualities/experience Are Desirable
  • Experience of working on a variety of project types
  • Proficient on O365
  • Holds a current driving licence
Role holder qualifications

The role holder is likely to have one or more of the following: CSCS and SMSTS or Equivalent.
