Job Vacancy:

Subject Matter Expert - Transport & Infrastructure

Most of the work in this role will be performed on BSI premises, but working off-site may be required (possibly globally).

Purpose of Position

BSI's Product Certification Business Unit is a key provider of testing and certification services to a range of industries. This role provides expertise and technical leadership within this specialist area.

The successful applicant will support the Team Manager with technical, accreditation, and HSE administration and development tasks. They will also evaluate products and/or services—primarily for safety, efficiency, fitness for purpose, or against bespoke customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

• Be the “owner” of methodologies related to Transport & Infrastructure evaluation performed by BSI.
• Resolve technical disputes, devise & interpret requirements where ambiguous, review & approve technical reports.
• Review new & amended standards, research & develop new test methods.
• Train and mentor colleagues, drive continual improvement projects.
• Liaise & drive lab improvements & CapEx projects.
• Represent BSI in relevant industry technical groups.
• Maintain complete & traceable records & reports.

Dimensions

• Deliver UKAS accredited (and unaccredited) product evaluation activities on products for BSI. Short-term projects require high-quality, “right first time” evaluations.
• Your judgment will support ongoing activities, meeting certification & accreditation requirements.
• Deliver projects or tasks supporting the Team Manager and work independently.
• Handle multiple projects simultaneously, typically around 50 per year, with time pressures from clients.

The successful applicant will have:

• Expert knowledge of relevant standards and procedures.
• Minimum HNC/HND or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
• Experience in testing within transport & infrastructure disciplines (e.g., pipes, copper tubing, vehicle glass, manhole covers).
• Good communication skills, including clear report writing.
• Proactive, customer-focused approach.
• Ability to work as part of a team under tight deadlines.
• Proficiency in Word and Excel.
• Extensive experience with testing techniques used in laboratories, familiarity with ISO 17025.
• Problem-solving skills.
