RailwayPeople is seeking an experienced Sub Agent or Section Engineer to join a growing rail civils team in Essex. The role blends site management with technical engineering, design assurance and programming duties, supporting a Greater Anglia scheme at a station site.

Qualifications

• Railway civil works delivery experience, ideally station projects.
• Previous rail experience essential.
• Valid PTS certification and CSCS card.
• Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications and technical information.

• Strong IT and computer skills.
• Experience coordinating subcontractors and site activities.
• Experience with Tier 1 contractors desirable (advantageous).

Role Overview

My client is looking to appoint a Sub Agent to join their growing rail civils team, initially supporting the delivery of works at a Station in Essex.

The role is a hybrid position combining site management responsibilities with technical engineering, design assurance and programming duties. This is not a setting-out role and would suit an experienced Section Engineer looking to step up, or an established Sub Agent who is comfortable combining technical responsibilities with the day-to-day management of works.

The successful candidate will initially be predominantly based at a Station in Essex, where the team is delivering a Greater Anglia scheme involving a building on a Platform which is experiencing subsidence.

The wider scope includes taking down an existing wall, installing new columns to support the station canopy, relining the canopy, installing new dagger boards and delivering associated civils and drainage works to the platform and rear of the station.

You will also support other projects within the team as required, including works at another Essex Station. Following the demolition of an existing multi-storey car park, the scheme involves new drainage, resurfacing and general civils works to reinstate the car park.

Working closely with the Project Manager, you will help manage the technical and operational delivery of the projects, including programming, design assurance, subcontractor coordination and general site management.

The contractor has a growing pipeline of rail work across East Anglia, with future schemes including further canopy and possession works, and opportunities associated with the C2C network.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist the Project Manager with the day-to-day management and delivery of rail civils projects
• Support the planning and programming of works
• Manage and coordinate subcontractors and site activities
• Oversee general civils, drainage, structural and station improvement works
• Support and manage design assurance processes
• Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications and technical information
• Monitor progress against the construction programme and identify potential delays
• Coordinate labour, plant, materials and subcontractors where required
• Ensure works are delivered safely and in accordance with the required quality standards
• Manage health, safety and environmental matters across the site
• Prepare, review and brief relevant safety and construction documentation
• Maintain accurate site records, progress information and project documentation
• Prepare regular progress updates for the Project Manager
• Liaise with clients, designers, consultants, subcontractors and the wider project team
• Support the delivery of possession works, including night and weekend activities where required
• Provide technical support across other projects within the team as required

Essential Requirements

• Previous experience working as a Sub Agent, Section Engineer or in a similar engineering role - please note, Site and Setting Out Engineers will not be considered for this role
• Strong experience delivering general civil engineering works within a railway environment, ideally station projects
• Previous rail experience is essential
• Valid PTS certification and CSCS card
• Strong technical understanding of civil engineering and construction delivery
• Experience with design assurance processes
• Experience planning and programming construction works
• Strong IT and computer skills
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications and technical information
• Experience coordinating subcontractors and site activities
• Experience working for a Tier 1 contractor is highly desirable, however candidates from other backgrounds will be considered

Working Arrangements

• The role will initially be predominantly based at a Station in Essex.
• Travel to other projects will be required to support the wider project team, with additional travel outside of the primary work location expensed.
• Night, weekend and possession work may be required depending on the programme, with applicable night and weekend work paid at 1.5 times the standard rate.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Section Engineer looking to progress into a Sub Agent position, or an experienced Sub Agent seeking to join a growing rail contractor with a strong pipeline of upcoming work across East Anglia.

The position offers a clear route towards Project Management while retaining involvement in the technical, engineering and delivery aspects of rail civils projects.
