Job summary

Job description

An excellent opportunity for a Section Engineer stepping up, or a Sub Agent looking for a good route for progression.

A growing civil engineering contractor is looking for a Sub Agent to take charge of complex, fast-moving work packages across rail, highways and specialist civils. This role suits someone who enjoys coordinating multiple disciplines, managing interfaces and keeping technically challenging sections running smoothly. You'll be the link between planning, engineering and delivery, ensuring the works are safe, sequenced correctly and executed to a high standard.

The Role You'll lead defined sections of work, ensuring programme, quality, engineering controls and subcontractor activities are aligned and well‑managed. The projects involve rail possessions, highways interfaces, geotechnical stabilisation and structural concrete, requiring strong coordination and clear communication.

Key responsibilities include:

• Planning and managing section delivery, ensuring works are ready, resourced and sequenced correctly.
• Leading short-term programmes and look-aheads, integrating labour, plant and materials with overall project requirements.
• Coordinating subcontractors across soil nailing, piling, shotcrete and RC packages, ensuring scope, interfaces and constraints are understood.
• Overseeing engineering controls, QA, ITPs, temporary works integration and technical compliance.
• Working closely with designers, TWC/TWS and APs to resolve technical issues and ensure safe, buildable solutions.
• Managing rail-related activities, ensuring PTS requirements, access planning and possession constraints are fully considered.
• Providing clear leadership to Section Engineers and Site Engineers, setting expectations and supporting development.
• Maintaining strong safety standards and promoting continuous improvement across the section.

Requirements

• Experience as a Sub Agent or a strong Section Engineer ready to step up.
• Background in rail, highways or heavy civils, ideally with exposure to soil nailing, piling, shotcrete or RC works.
• PTS and CSCS essential.
• Strong understanding of temporary works; ideal if you've worked closely with a TWC or held AP responsibilities.
• Confident planner with solid forecasting, coordination and communication skills.
• HNC/HND or degree in Civil Engineering.
