Job summary

William College in Leeds seeks a Student Success Tutor to support students with academic skills, assessment navigation and progression planning. You will monitor progress, intervene early and deliver targeted workshops to enhance independent learning in a college setting.

The role involves one-to-one and group support, both on campus and remotely, with a focus on building confidence, interpreting feedback and promoting strong engagement with teaching staff and peers.

Qualifications

• Working knowledge of higher education academic processes; experience providing academic, learning or study skills support.
• Experience delivering academic skills workshops or group support sessions.
• Ability to explain assessment criteria, academic conventions and tutor feedback clearly to turn comments into actions.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build rapport with students.
• Ability to monitor student progress and provide tailored academic advice and interventions.
• Experience maintaining accurate records in line with data protection
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital tools used for online teaching and student engagement.
• Experience supporting Foundation Year students or those entering higher education without formal qualifications.
• Confidence in supporting maths-based assessments.
• Experience supporting students for whom English is a second language.
• Understanding barriers to student engagement including mental health, disability and finances.
• Experience with franchise/partnership/subcontractual delivery with a partner university.
• Awareness of inclusive teaching and learning practices.
• Familiarity with student record systems or VLEs like Moodle/Blackboard.

Responsibilities

• Provide structured one-to-one academic support, in person and remote, guiding students on support options and usage.
• Engage with students’ interests to build academic confidence, including those returning to formal education.
• Help students build relationships with peers and staff to foster belonging within the College.
• Enable students to take responsibility for learning and progression toward independence.
• Deliver group workshops, assessment clinics and skills sessions aligned to programme requirements and assessment calendars.
• Support students’ transition into higher education during induction, especially in early weeks.
• Explain assessment briefs, marking criteria and conventions; plan approaches to assignments.
• Support students through submission cycles with proactive contact to maximise submission rates.
• Follow up with non-submitting students to identify reasons and next steps (resubmission, extenuating circumstances, referral).
• Assist students to interpret feedback and act on it for improvements in subsequent work.
• Provide guidance on study skills, academic writing, reading and workload management, especially with multiple deadlines.
• Help students locate and use appropriate learning resources and develop teaching resources across formats.
