Job summary

STERIS Instrument Processing is hiring an entry-level Sterile Services Technician. You will train on end-to-end sterilization and decontamination of surgical instruments used in NHS/private hospitals, preparing sterile supplies and learning to operate sterilizers and tracing systems.

The program includes Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant Apprenticeship with on-the-job training and study time. London-based role with structured career progression and comprehensive training.

Qualifications

• Educated to a good general standard with demonstrable verbal and numerical abilities.
• Basic end-user IT skills to operate track and traceability IT systems.

Responsibilities

• Follow a highly regulated end to end sterilization/decontamination process on surgical instruments.
• Prepare sterile consumables by decontamination, inspection, assembly and packing.
• Inspect and pack theatre instrument sets to meet contract specifications.
• Operate and monitor washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic and sterilizers safely.
• Record repairs and missing instruments on the Tracking and Traceability system.
• Return repaired instruments to stock or coded sets.

Working Pattern

• 12 weeks training, the first few weeks you will work on Monday - Friday at 9 - 5pm, thereafter, training will continue during your regular shift hours which will be;
• Rotating shiftsbetween the hours of 7am - 10pm, (there will be weekend working of circa 50%)

What You Will Do

• Following a highly regulated end to end sterilization/decontamination process on surgical instruments that have been used in operations in local NHS and private hospitals, to ensure they can be used again safely for the next patient.
• Ensuring the effective preparation of sterile consumables (dressings, linen, surgical instruments, and equipment) by the process of decontamination, inspection assembly and packing within predefined quality standards.
• Rigorously checking, washing, laying up and packing sets of theatre instruments to meet contract specifications within predefined quality standards.
• Safely operating and monitoring machines and equipment (washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic and sterilisers) effectively.
• Ensuring that repairs and missing instruments or equipment are recorded and logged on the Tracking and Traceability computer system (SynergyTrak).
• Ensuring that repaired instruments or equipment are returned to stock or the appropriate coded sets or the Trust’s appointed person.

Access to a Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant Apprenticeship! This is a 12-15 month fully funded programme studying good scientific practice for the Healthcare profession! It is universally applicable outside of STERIS! Completed on the job, you are given 20% of your working hours to study towards the qualification. Further apprenticeships are available throughout the course of your career!
