STERIS Instrument Processing in the UK is recruiting a Sterile Services Technician. This entry‑level role offers world‑class training and a defined career pathway in surgical instrument sterilisation.

You will work through a 12‑week training plan, then continue training alongside your regular shift hours. The role includes handling decontamination, packing, and accuracy checks, with opportunities for ongoing education and progression.

Qualifications

  • Educated to a good general standard.
  • Basic end-user IT skills to operate track and traceability IT systems.

Responsibilities

  • Follow a highly regulated end to end sterilization/decontamination process on surgical instruments to ensure they can be used again safely.
  • Prepare sterile consumables (dressings, linen, surgical instruments, and equipment) by decontamination, inspection, assembly and packing to predefined quality standards.
  • Rigorously check, wash, lay up and pack theatre instrument sets to meet contract specs.
  • Safely operate and monitor machines and equipment (washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic and sterilisers).
  • Record repairs and missing instruments on the Tracking and Traceability system (SynergyTrak).
  • Return repaired instruments or equipment to stock or the appropriate coded sets or Trust-appointed person.

TRAINING AND WORKING PATTERN
  • 12 weeks training, the first few weeks you will work on Monday - Friday at 9-5pm, thereafter, training will continue during your regular shift hours which will be;
  • 0 Hours Contract Basis
WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Following a highly regulated end to end sterilization/decontamination process on surgical instruments that have been used in operations in local NHS and private hospitals, to ensure they can be used again safely for the next patient.
  • Ensuring the effective preparation of sterile consumables (dressings, linen, surgical instruments, and equipment) by the process of decontamination, inspection assembly and packing within predefined quality standards.
  • Rigorously checking, washing, laying up and packing sets of theatre instruments to meet contract specifications within predefined quality standards.
  • Safely operating and monitoring machines and equipment (washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic and sterilisers) effectively.
  • Ensuring that repairs and missing instruments or equipment are recorded and logged on the Tracking and Traceability computer system (SynergyTrak).
  • Ensuring that repaired instruments or equipment are returned to stock or the appropriate coded sets or the Trust’s appointed person.

Access to a Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant Apprenticeship! This is a 12-15 month fully funded programme studying good scientific practice for the Healthcare profession! It is universally applicable outside of STERIS! Completed on the job, you are given 20% of your working hours to study towards the qualification. Further apprenticeships are available throughout the course of your career!
