An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Service (CWPS) for a Specialty doctor in medical microbiology to join a vibrant microbiology department.
The team works closely with the Virology and Infectious Disease departments.
The team provides a comprehensive clinical service including seven multidisciplinary team meetings/ward rounds, bedside review of patients and antimicrobial stewardship on the acute medical wards.
The team also provides clinical and laboratory liaison with Paediatrics, ICU, Orthopaedic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Haematology, Neurosurgery, Transplant medicine and Renal medicine to name a few.
There are opportunities for clinical and laboratory research as well as development in many areas of infection.
The successful candidate will support the Clinical Microbiology Consultants in delivering all relevant aspects of the clinical, laboratory, and infection control service for the three Trusts and colleagues in general practice. The Clinical Microbiologists work as an ‘interface’ between the laboratory and their clinical colleagues in the hospital and in the community. The role includes advising on the appropriate samples to take, antibiotic prescribing, interpretation of results, clinical authorisation of laboratory results, phoning important results, daily ward rounds on Intensive Care, assessment of complex patients on the wards if required and regular MDT participation in other areas such as the Renal Unit, Neurosurgery, Neonatal ITU, infective endocarditis, bone and joint infections, OPAT service and combined infection/Radiology MDT.
On call out of hours and weekend working: When the post-holder deemed competent (which will, to some extent, depend on prior experience) they will be required to participate fully in the week night out of hours rota and the weekend rota, which is approximately one night a week and one weekend in five. The specialty doctors are covered by a consultant when on call.

Please note that the posts are part of a rotation, and the post-holder may be expected to be willing to work at any of the three sites as the service requires. However, the successful candidates would start at UHCWT, to gain knowledge of the laboratory and this large teaching hospital.
