Benefits of the Role

The Role and Its Responsibilities

The SENCo will play a central role in ensuring that students with special educational needs and disabilities receive appropriate, high-quality provision that enables them to thrive academically, socially and personally.

Working closely with senior leaders, teachers, support staff, parents and external professionals, the post holder will oversee the effective coordination of SEND provision and promote a culture in which inclusive teaching is embedded throughout the school.

The main areas of responsibility will include:

  • Leadership and Coaching Ability: The confidence to guide and support colleagues, influence teaching practice and encourage professional development, while building a shared understanding of how best to meet the needs of students with SEND.
  • Evaluation and Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to interpret complex information, assess the effectiveness of existing provision, identify areas for development and implement practical solutions that improve student progress and outcomes.
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: The ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with students, families, colleagues and external professionals, building positive working relationships based on trust, respect and a shared commitment to achieving the best for every young person.
