Job summary

Port of Tilbury London Ltd is seeking two Service Technicians to join the LCTE Engineering team. You will perform planned maintenance, fault diagnosis and mechanical/electrical repairs on terminal equipment, focusing on safety and reliability to minimise downtime.

You''ll work across mechanical and electrical disciplines, with opportunities to progress within a growing port operation. A formal engineering apprenticeship and Level 3 NVQ/ONC/HNC are required, along with strong fault-finding skills

Qualifications

  • Level 3 NVQ/ONC/HNC in engineering required.
  • Completed engineering apprenticeship.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills in mechanical fitting.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on terminal equipment, including Straddle Carriers, Ship-to-Shore Cranes, and other assets.
  • Work across mechanical and electrical disciplines to maximise reliability and availability.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns safely and promptly.
  • Record maintenance activities, inspections, fault findings and repairs in the CMMS.
  • Provide updates to Shift Supervisors and Engineering Management on equipment condition and progress.

Compensation: £53,745 + Shift allowance £5,374

About The Role

We are seeking to appoint two Service Technicians to join the LCTE Engineering team at the Port of Tilbury.

In this role, you will work as part of a dedicated engineering team primarily responsible for the planned maintenance on a range of terminal equipment. The position involves carrying out scheduled maintenance, fault diagnosis, and mechanical and electrical repairs, while providing technical support to operational plant.

You will ensure compliance with safety standards, maintain optimal equipment performance, and maximise plant reliability, with a strong focus on safety, equipment availability and minimising downtime.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance, including defect repairs, on a fleet of Straddle Carriers, Ship-to-Shore Container Cranes, and various other terminal equipment.
  • Work flexibly across mechanical and electrical disciplines in line with company safety, environmental, and operational standards to maximise equipment reliability and availability.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns, as required, on key terminal assets in a safe and timely manner.
  • Ensure all maintenance work is completed safely and to a high standard, supporting equipment reliability and operational performance.
  • Accurately and concisely record all maintenance activities, inspections, fault findings, and repairs using the designated maintenance reporting software.
  • Communicate effectively with Shift Supervisors and Engineering Management, providing timely updates on equipment condition, faults, and work progress.
  • Support equipment reliability and compliance through fault investigation, statutory inspections, safety checks, and accurate maintenance records.
  • Safely operate and inspect engineering plant and equipment in accordance with company procedures, including the use of MEWPs, Forklifts, and plant vehicles.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and cleanliness across workshops and equipment.
  • Take responsibility for your own health and safety, and that of others, fully complying with all London Container Terminal health, safety, environmental, and security policies.
  • Work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with Operations, Engineering colleagues, and Technical Specialists to support safe and efficient terminal operations.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to work shift patterns and overtime as required to meet operational demands.
Essential Qualifications
  • Level 3 NVQ, ONC or HNC in an engineering related discipline.
  • Completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship.

  • General mechanical fitting with strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Experience in engine diagnostics.
  • Hot works, welding and fabrication.
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, and schematics.
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment and specialist maintenance tools.
  • Preventative and condition-based maintenance techniques.
  • Safe isolation (LOTO) and permit-to-work procedures.
Desirable Skills (Not Essential)
  • Electrical fault-finding skills on industrial and mobile plant systems.
  • Knowledge of hybrid and DC battery systems.
  • Experience with PLC-controlled equipment and industrial control systems.
  • Experience using Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
IT & Personal Skills
  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Practical, hands-on approach with strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to provide clear and accurate updates to colleagues and management.
  • Strong attention to detail, with a commitment to safe working practices and high-quality workmanship.
