Job summary

Forth Ports is seeking an Engineering Technician for the Port of Tilbury Grain Terminal to perform planned maintenance, breakdown repairs and condition monitoring across plant and equipment, responding promptly to faults to keep the terminal running safely and efficiently.

The role requires 2–3 years’ maintenance experience in electrical or mechanical engineering, knowledge of PLCs, automation, hydraulics and pneumatics, and a Full UK Driving Licence; you will work a rotational shift including

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or NVQ Level 3 in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or similar, with 2–3 years’ maintenance experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, including PLCs, automation, hydraulics and pneumatics.
  • Proven ability to carry out continuous electrical and mechanical fault-finding within an industrial fixed plant and equipment environment.
  • Knowledge of health and safety, environmental standards, quality management and food safety regulations.
  • Experience operating heavy plant and mobile platforms within a port or industrial environment.
  • Prior shift working experience, with flexibility to work a rotational shift pattern including weekends.
  • Experience with DSEAR and ATEX regulations, and COMPEX EX05/EX06 qualifications, would be desirable but are not essential as training will be provided.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • Full Driving Licence, valid in the UK
  • Full UK Working Rights

Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of terminal plant and equipment to support efficient repairs and minimise downtime.
  • Carry out installations, improvements and modifications to new and existing plant, systems and equipment.
  • Promptly report any damage, misuse or operational concerns relating to plant and equipment to Engineering or Operational Managers.
  • Undertake ancillary tasks such as fuelling, lubrication and cleaning when required to support uninterrupted operations.
  • Communicate clearly with team members, Supervisors and Managers to provide updates on plant status, repairs and breakdown activity.
  • Prepare engineering reports and complete required documentation, including statutory check records where appropriate.
  • Follow all written and verbal instructions, including radio communications, from Engineering Supervisors and Managers.
  • Work flexibly across workshops and operational areas while maintaining compliance with company and statutory requirements.

Job Title: Engineering Technician

Location: Port of Tilbury

Hours: 40 hours per week (Alternate shifts of 0600 to 1400 Monday to Friday, 1400 to 2200 Monday to Friday, 2200 to 0600 Sunday to Thursday)

Compensation: £57,190 + £5,254 Shift Allowance

About the role

The Port of Tilbury Grain Terminal is the UK’s largest grain handling facility for both imports and exports, operating to food-grade standards through a state-of-the-art, fully automated and highly flexible terminal. As an Engineering Technician, you will play a vital role in carrying out planned and reactive maintenance across plant, equipment and engineering systems, responding promptly to faults and breakdowns and helping ensure the Grain Terminal continues to operate safely, efficiently and reliably.

Key responsibilities:

  • Perform planned maintenance, breakdown repairs and condition monitoring activities across plant and equipment.

What we're looking for:

We are looking for a practical, safety-focused Engineering Technician with strong electrical and mechanical maintenance experience in an industrial environment. You will be confident fault-finding on fixed plant and equipment, comfortable working as part of a collaborative engineering team, and flexible in supporting a rotational shift pattern, including weekends. Experience in grain, port, food-grade or similar operational environments would be beneficial.
