Job summary

SSE is seeking a Senior Substation Design Engineer based in Scotland with a strong background in high-voltage substation and transmission design. The role focuses on leading technical decisions across Island projects and 33kV–400kV assets, shaping configurations for HVDC interfaces and grid stability.

You will collaborate with consultants and partners, review designs, and steer engineering risk management while developing a skilled Substation Engineering team across SSE’s network.

Qualifications

• Experience in substation, transmission or complex electrical infrastructure design.
• Understanding of relevant engineering standards, legislation and design requirements including CDM.
• Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Review and approve primary substation designs from up to 400kV during development and delivery.
• Provide senior technical input into engineering decisions and manage engineering risk.
• Influence solutions across the project portfolio through technical challenge and peer review.
• Provide technical leadership and coaching to Project Engineers and build team capability.
