A leading defense organization in Newport seeks a Senior Scientist specializing in AI and Machine Learning for cyber security research. The role involves conducting research, designing innovative solutions, and collaborating with internal and external partners. Candidates should have a Master's or PhD in a relevant field and strong programming skills in Python. This is a hybrid role with a 12-month contract and a competitive hourly rate. You must be eligible for BPSS clearance and be UK-based.
Location: Newport, Wales (Hybrid - 3 days onsite)
Contract: 12 months (strong likelihood of extension)
Rate: £50 per hour (Umbrella)
IR35: Inside IR35
Clearance: BPSS (must be eligible)
We are supporting a defence organisation at the forefront of cyber security research and innovation, seeking a Senior Scientist with strong expertise in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning applied to cyber security.
This is a research-led role, focused on the security of AI/ML systems, exploring emerging threats, developing novel approaches, and shaping future cyber capability. You will work in an environment where problems are genuinely complex and often have no off-the-shelf solutions.
Conducting hands‑on AI/ML research in cyber security, with particular focus on the security of AI/ML systems
Designing and prototyping innovative solutions to emerging cyber threats
Translating research into practical outputs, including prototypes, reports, white papers and technical documentation
Collaborating with internal cyber teams, industry partners and academic institutions
Contributing to horizon scanning, innovation roadmaps and future capability development
Supporting knowledge transfer and mentoring activities within the wider team
Essential:
A Master's or PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or Cyber Security
Strong research background (academic, applied or industrial)
Deep understanding of AI/ML algorithms and techniques
Strong Python skills for research and prototyping
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly
Desirable:
Experience applying AI/ML in cyber security contexts
Research into adversarial machine learning, model robustness or AI system security
Publications, patents or other research outputs
Cyber security certifications or relevant research experience
Work on nationally significant cyber challenges
Engage in genuine research and innovation, not operational delivery
Collaborate with leading experts across government, industry and academia
Be part of a long‑term programme with strong continuity and impact
Due to the nature of the work, applicants must be UK-based and eligible for BPSS clearance.
