GitLab is hiring for Backend Engineer (Ruby), Plan: Spec-Driven Development in UK, remote role. You will own backend features from early product discussions through technical design, implementation, rollout, and post-launch learning.

Join a four-engineer Plan team spanning Canada and Europe, collaborating in an all-remote, async-first environment to ship high-impact features and mentor others while shaping technical directions across agent workflows.

Qualifications

• Strong Ruby on Rails experience in a large production codebase.
• Production experience with Python is a plus.
• Experience owning features end-to-end with clear outcomes.
• Product mindset with scope-shaping and trade-off decisions.
• Full-stack background with backend focus and API design.
• Ability to work independently and mentor others.

Responsibilities

• Lead backend features from early product discussions through design, rollout and post-launch learning.
• Build flows, APIs, and data models behind agent-generated work items and plans.
• Develop evaluation systems to measure workflow quality and costs.
• Use Ruby on Rails and Python to build reliable production systems with PostgreSQL and GraphQL.
• Collaborate with product, design, engineers, and users to shape scope and decisions.
• Coordinate multi-person projects in a remote, async environment.
• Mentor engineers and influence technical direction within Plan group.
• Work in short iterations and showcase progress via demos.
