Job summary

GitLab is recruiting a Backend Engineer to help build the Plan: Spec-Driven Development flows and the agent-driven work-item loop. You will own backend work across APIs, data models, and evaluation systems, collaborating with design partners and users in a highly visible product area.

In a small, distributed team across regions, you will mentor peers, influence technical direction, and ship major features from unclear problems through release.

Qualifications

• Strong Ruby on Rails experience in a large production codebase.
• Production experience with Python is required.
• Experience owning features end to end from scope to launch.
• API design and API-driven development mindset.
• Experience reading frontend code and designing robust APIs.
• Experience with AI-assisted development is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead backend features from early product discussions through technical design, implementation, rollout, and post-launch learning.
• Build the flows, APIs, and data models behind agent-generated work items and plans.
• Develop evaluation systems measuring workflow quality and cost.
• Use Ruby on Rails and Python to build reliable production systems with PostgreSQL and GraphQL.
• Collaborate with product, design, engineers, and users to shape scope and trade-offs.
• Coordinate multi-person projects in an all-remote environment.
• Mentor other engineers and contribute to technical direction.
• Work in short iterations, share demos, and use feedback to guide next steps.
