Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the External Agents team. You will design and build integrations that bring GitLab agents into tools such as Slack and connect external AI solutions with GitLab. You’ll take end-to-end ownership of complex features and help shape architectural patterns for exposing GitLab AI functionality.

This high-visibility role works across the AI Catalog group, collaborating with engineers to advance the agent platform within the GitLab ecosystem.

Qualifications

• Experience building and maintaining production applications with Ruby on Rails.
• Design and ship scalable REST or GraphQL APIs with stable contracts for frontend clients.
• Strong SQL skills and experience with PostgreSQL.
• Experience identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks at application and infra levels.
• Collaborative, async work in a distributed team with open communication.

Responsibilities

• Develop, ship, and maintain secure, well-tested integrations across the GitLab monolith backend.
• Collaborate with Product, UX, frontend, backend, and AI specialists to refine requirements and deliver improvements.
• Design and review GraphQL/REST APIs and backend logic with clear frontend contracts.
• Improve automated testing (RSpec and others) to boost quality and feedback loops.
• Share standards and patterns to support responsible AI integration across the team.
• Participate in on-call rotations and aid in observability and resiliency.
