Job description

Job Opportunity: Postdoctoral Researcher in MRI Physics

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher with a background in MRI physics and a strong interest in translational research. The successful candidate will work on developing an efficient MRI protocol and neuroradiological report for Parkinson’s disease (PD) at NAU, under the guidance of Dr. David Thomas and Professor Tarek Yousry.

The role involves collaborating with teams across UCL, the NHS, and Siemens Healthineers. Responsibilities include implementing MRI sequences useful for PD diagnosis (such as T1w structural imaging, quantitative susceptibility mapping, and neuromelanin-weighted imaging). You will utilize the latest rapid acquisition schemes, combining parallel imaging and deep learning-based reconstructions to minimize scan times while maintaining high image quality. The goal is to create a visual summary of imaging data for neuroradiologists, similar to existing implementations for other neurological conditions.

This position is available immediately, funded by an MRC Gap fund for early-stage healthcare intervention development, until 31 March. It is offered part-time, at hours per week (Full-Time Equivalent).

If you require reasonable adjustments or accessible application formats, or have questions about the application process, please contact the Institute of Neurology HR Team.

For informal inquiries regarding the role, please contact Dr. David Thomas.

A detailed job description and person specification are available below.

About You

You should have a PhD in MRI Physics, Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroimaging, or a related field. Prior postdoctoral experience with a publication record and experience supervising staff or students is required. Practical experience in developing and implementing MRI acquisition protocols, along with familiarity with MRI data processing and analysis packages, is essential. Knowledge of MRI acquisition methods relevant to neuroimaging is also necessary.

This role does not qualify for a Skilled Worker Visa sponsorship under UK Visas and Immigration legislation, and UCL cannot sponsor individuals requiring UK work rights.

What We Offer

The starting salary is £27,000 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance, based on a full-time equivalent of £54,000.

We offer a range of benefits, including:

  • 41 days holiday (27 days annual leave, 8 bank holidays, and 6 closure days)
  • Additional 5 days’ annual leave purchase scheme
  • Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE)
  • Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan
  • On-site gym
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption pay
