Job description

About us

Our mission is to maximise and advocate for the holistic health of all children, young people, and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education, and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children's health research outside North America. The 2024-29 GOS ICH strategy focuses on its five scientific programmes. GOS ICH's activities include active engagement with children and families to ensure our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates funding for our research by submitting high-quality proposals to public, charitable, and industrial funding bodies, and disseminates research findings through publications in medical and scientific literature, targeting clinicians, policymakers, and the wider public. The Institute offers world-class education and training across various programmes addressing the needs of students and professionals interested in child health. GOS ICH holds an Athena SWAN Charter Gold Award.

About the role

The Vision and Eyes Group at UCL is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced postdoctoral epidemiologist or data scientist to join us in a novel and ambitious multidisciplinary project aimed at improving the health, educational, and social outcomes of childhood vision impairment. The project involves investigating long-term outcomes using two unique datasets: the British Childhood Vision Impairment Study (BCVIS) and BCVIS2, which include clinical data and linked records from the National Pupil Dataset (NPD) and Hospital Episode Statistics (HES).

This is a chance for an experienced epidemiologist or data scientist to conduct high-impact research, manage a multidisciplinary project, and develop expertise within a leading Vision and Eyes research group. The position is funded by a grant from the Medical Research Foundation and is based within the Population, Policy and Practice Research and Teaching Department at GOS ICH, UCL. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively, contribute to publications, and present findings at meetings and conferences.

The salary is £52,487 per annum, funded for 36 months, with an expected start date from July 2025 (negotiable). The application deadline is 15th June, with interviews on 30th June.

About you

Applicants should hold a PhD in Epidemiology or Data Science, with relevant postdoctoral experience in applied health research. Experience in analyzing large healthcare datasets and publishing peer-reviewed articles is essential. Candidates must have a strong knowledge of epidemiological and/or data science research methods and robust statistical skills.
