Job summary

IonQ in Oxford, England is seeking a Senior Systems Software Engineer for the Runtime Software team. You will collaborate with experimental scientists to implement real-time control behaviours and build abstractions for their experiments, enabling scalable, fault-tolerant quantum compute systems.

Qualifications

• Strong programming skills in one or more mainstream languages and a solid foundation in systems programming.
• Experience with real-time Linux or embedded systems or low-latency computing environments.
• Interest in Rust and ability to contribute to a Rust-based runtime environment.
• Excellent communication across software and cross-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Develop abstractions over real-time control hardware for deterministic, reproducible ion control.
• Drive integration with system orchestration, non-realtime control, and compilers for seamless architecture fit.
• Collaborate with FPGA and electronics teams to shape overall system design.
• Implement drivers for real-time devices and create tooling to speed iterative development.
