Job summary

IonQ in Oxford, UK, is seeking a Director, Systems Software to lead a large software group powering our quantum computers. You’ll plan and manage software development from real-time control to compiler layers, and grow the team into a world-class, end-to-end stack specialist.

You’ll define stack components, drive devops and release processes, and ensure alignment with internal and external customers while collaborating with world‑class quantum scientists.

Qualifications

• Proven experience leading a software organisation with tens of engineers and specialists.
• Track record in setting priorities, clear expectations and delivering for internal and external customers.
• Understanding standard software development processes and applying them pragmatically.
• Excellent technical and organisational communication skills across teams and stakeholders.
• Experience with branching, release practices, internal triage and support workflows.

Responsibilities

• In this role, accelerate delivery of software projects and contribute to R&D roadmap.
• Define and evolve internal team processes and DevOps workflows as the stack matures.
• Collaborate with other teams to build stronger cross-team interfaces and processes.
• Lead the software team and work with technical teams to develop long-term roadmaps.
• Capture feature requests from internal and external requirements and manage the backlog.
• Own the software team backlog and provide clear updates to stakeholders.
