Job summary

Mott MacDonald seeks a Data Centre Mechanical Design Lead to provide technical leadership across planning, design and delivery of major data centre projects in the UK and Europe. You will guide mechanical solutions from feasibility through handover, ensuring buildability and alignment with client performance requirements.

Qualifications

• Significant experience leading mechanical design on data centre or mission-critical projects.
• Strong understanding of cooling strategies and energy efficiency.
• Experience across project stages from feasibility to commissioning.
• Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage interfaces.
• Confident in explaining complex technical matters to diverse audiences.
• Experience in consultancy/contractor/client organisations.
• Collaborative and inclusive leadership with mentoring focus.

Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design and technical delivery of major data centre projects in the UK and Europe.
• Provide technical direction through feasibility, master planning, concept design, detailed design, construction support, commissioning and handover.
• Develop resilient, energy-efficient mechanical strategies aligned with client and sustainability requirements.
• Lead design and review of cooling, ventilation, chilled water, airside, heat rejection and related controls.
• Coordinate with project managers and design managers on scope, programme, resources, interfaces and risks.
• Collaborate with electrical, structural, civil, architectural, fire, controls and commissioning teams.
• Provide senior review of calculations, drawings, specifications and equipment selections.
• Support buildability, commissioning readiness and operational performance.
• Build trusted relationships with clients, contractors and vendors.
• Support pursuits, proposals and technical presentations as a senior mechanical specialist.
• Contribute to design standards and knowledge sharing across the portfolio.
• Mentor and develop mechanical engineers and design managers.
• Share expertise across Mott MacDonald and wider network.
