Job summary

Tesco Stores Limited is seeking engineers to join our authentication APIs team, building scalable, secure systems powering millions of customer sessions across online, phone and in-store touchpoints. You’ll work with Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, Kubernetes, Azure and Kafka, shaping high‑performant, resilient services, and contributing to DevOps culture and TDD practices.

Qualifications

• Expert proficiency in at least one major programming language (Java preferred).
• Significant experience designing, building and supporting large-scale distributed systems.
• A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively within a cross-functional team.
• Strong understanding of software engineering principles (SOLID, design patterns) and how to apply them.
• A DevOps mindset, with good experience of supporting production systems, resolving incidents, and performing root cause analysis.
• Experience leading technical initiatives and influencing engineering decisions across multiple teams.

Responsibilities

• Designing, building and maintaining high-performing mission-critical systems, making architectural decisions that balance scalability, security, resilience and operational excellence.
• Leading the technical design of complex features and initiatives, ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient, secure, and aligned to our strategy.
• Partnering with product managers and the wider team to shape requirements, influence technical direction and deliver business outcomes.
• Providing technical leadership across teams, leading key initiatives and influencing technical direction.
• Driving engineering excellence through high-quality software development practices.
• Taking ownership of production systems, leading incident resolution and root cause analysis, and driving improvements to enhance reliability, security and performance.
• Sharing knowledge with the wider engineering community.
• Mentoring and supporting engineers and helping raise engineering standards.
• Contributing to recruitment and interview processes. Helping us to attract, assess and develop engineering talent.
• Strong understanding of identity and access management concepts, such as OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (OIDC), would be advantageous.
