Job summary

Tesco is seeking a Software Development Engineer II to join our collaborative team. You will contribute to the design and development of high-performance backend services that process real‑time behavioural data for millions of users, helping power analytics and personalised experiences across Tesco’s platforms.

You’ll work with Java and Spring Boot, pair with senior engineers, and gain hands-on experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines while contributing to scalable distributed

Qualifications

• Working knowledge of Java and backend development.
• Familiarity with object-oriented programming principles.
• Some experience building event-driven services and/or REST APIs.
• Willingness to learn and collaborate in a team environment.
• Strong communication skills and curiosity about scalable systems.

Responsibilities

• Develop features for a backend event-driven platform using Java and Spring Boot.
• Pair with more senior engineers to design, implement, test and ship code.
• Learn to use observability tools to monitor live systems.
• Participate in planning sessions and team discussions to understand requirements.
• Write automated test suites to ensure code correctness and maintainability.
• Review code and contribute to development practices.
• Develop understanding of distributed systems and performance optimisation.
• Create, maintain and deploy applications using CI/CD pipelines.
• Gain hands-on experience with Kafka, Kubernetes and distributed services.
