Job summary

WSP in Cardiff is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead technically complex geotechnical and geological projects within a growing UK team. You will develop ground models, manage multi-disciplinary tasks and deliver high-quality designs for major infrastructure schemes.

You will mentor junior engineers, contribute to bids and business development, and champion innovation and sustainability in ground delivery, supported by our hybrid working model.

Qualifications

• A strong technical understanding of geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, ground risk management and site investigation.
• Proven experience delivering geotechnical assessments, designs and project management responsibilities within consultancy, contractor or client organisations.
• Sound knowledge of soil and rock mechanics, geotechnical analysis and geotechnical design to relevant industry standards.
• Experience leading project tasks and coordinating multidisciplinary teams to successfully deliver project objectives.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to produce and review high-quality technical reports and design deliverables.
• Experience planning and supervising ground investigations, managing contractors and interpreting complex ground conditions.
• Strong client-facing skills with the ability to build relationships, manage stakeholder expectations and support business development activities.
• A proactive and collaborative approach, with a commitment to developing junior team members and contributing to a positive team culture.
• Chartered status with a relevant professional institution, or demonstrable progress towards achieving chartership in the near term.

Responsibilities

• Leading the delivery of technically complex geotechnical and geological projects, ensuring excellence in quality, programme and commercial performance.
• Developing and reviewing ground models, geotechnical interpretation and design parameters to support major infrastructure and development schemes.
• Undertaking and checking geotechnical analysis and design for slopes, retaining structures, foundations, earthworks and geohazard assessments.
• Managing projects and multidisciplinary work packages, including resource planning, financial performance and client satisfaction.
• Acting as a key point of contact for clients, developing trusted relationships and identifying opportunities for repeat and new business.
• Designing, procuring and managing ground investigations, overseeing site activities and providing technical leadership throughout project delivery.
• Providing mentorship, technical guidance and day-to-day support to junior engineers and engineering geologists, helping to develop future talent within the team.
• Contributing to bids, tenders and business development activities, supporting the continued growth of our geotechnical business.
• Championing innovation, sustainability and digital delivery practices, including the effective application of 3D ground models and data-driven solutions.
