We are seeking to appoint a caring, dedicated and enthusiastic SEND Teaching Assistant to join our friendly and inclusive primary school in Sheffield. This is a rewarding opportunity to support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), helping them to access learning, develop independence and achieve their full potential within a nurturing school environment.
The successful candidate will work closely with class teachers, the SENDCo and other professionals to provide high-quality support for pupils with a range of additional needs, ensuring every child is valued, included and encouraged to succeed.
As an SEND Teaching Assistant, you will:
Provide tailored support for pupils with a range of SEND, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, and cognition and learning difficulties.
Work on a one-to-one basis and with small groups to support learning, communication, emotional regulation and social development.
Deliver targeted interventions and personalized learning programmes under the direction of the class teacher and SENDCo.
Adapt learning activities and resources to meet individual pupil needs.
Promote positive behaviour using consistent strategies and individual support plans.
Encourage independence, confidence and resilience in pupils.
Monitor and record pupil progress, providing regular feedback to teachers and the SENDCo.
Support pupils with personal care where required, ensuring dignity and respect at all times.
Work collaboratively with families and external professionals to ensure pupils receive the support they need.
Contribute to maintaining a safe, inclusive and nurturing learning environment.
A recognised Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent).
Experience of working with children with SEND in a school or similar setting.
A good understanding of inclusive practice and strategies to support pupils with additional needs.
GCSE Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
The ability to build positive relationships with children, colleagues and parents.
A patient, calm and flexible approach, with a genuine passion for supporting children with SEND.
A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Experience supporting pupils with ASC, ADHD, SEMH or speech and language needs.
Knowledge of communication approaches such as Makaton, PECS or visual timetables.
Experience delivering intervention programmes.
Positive behaviour support or Team Teach training (or willingness to undertake training).
First Aid qualification.
