Job summary

SMART Education Recruitment is seeking an SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEND college in Aston from September 2026. You will support learners aged with Autism and complex needs, providing 1:1, 2:1 and small group assistance, while delivering targeted interventions to build life skills and independence.

The role offers part-time hours (26 per week, Mon-Thu 8:30am–3:00pm), a supportive environment, ongoing CPD, and potential for long-term progression.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in a UK school or college.
  • SEN Teaching Assistant background supporting students with SEND and complex needs.
  • Proven ability to provide 1:1, 2:1 and small group support, plus targeted interventions.
  • Understanding of EHCPs and individual support plans.
  • Ability to adapt learning materials to individual needs.
  • Relevant Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience.
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).
  • Strong communication and record-keeping skills.
  • Enhanced DBS on Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality 1:1, 2:1 and small group support.
  • Enable students with additional and complex needs to access learning and develop functional, social, and life skills.
  • Deliver targeted interventions in literacy, numeracy, social skills and emotional regulation.
  • Support the implementation of EHCP targets and individual support plans.
  • Adapt learning and classroom resources to meet individual student needs.
  • Monitor progress, keep clear records, and contribute to regular reviews.
  • Promote inclusion, engagement and positive behaviour.
  • Support students to develop independence, confidence, and key life skills.
  • Work closely with teachers and SEND professionals.

The Role

As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Work closely and collaboratively with teachers and SEND professionals
Skills and Experience
  • At least 2 years experience working in a UK school or college
  • Background as an SEN Teaching Assistant supporting students with SEND and complex needs
  • Proven ability to provide 1:1, 2:1 and small group support, as well as targeted interventions
  • Understanding of EHCPs and individual support plans
  • Knowledge of adapting learning materials to individual needs
  • Relevant Level 2 qualification (or equivalent experience)
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent)
  • Strong communication and record-keeping skills
  • Enhanced Child & Adult DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)

It would also be desirable if you have training or experience supporting Autism, SEMH, speech and language or behaviour needs, as well as experience supporting students with EHCPs, independence, or functional/life skills.

Location and Package
  • Location: Aston
  • Contract: Long-term, part-time (Monday Thursday, 8:30am 3:00pm, 26 hours per week)
  • Hourly pay: £14.62 £16.84
  • Start date: September 2026
