TeacherActive is recruiting a dedicated SEND Learning Support Assistant to join a well-established specialist SEND school in Chelmsford, Essex, supporting children aged 3–19 with SLD, PMLD, ASD and complex needs. You will work closely with teachers, therapists and education professionals to provide high-quality 1:1 and small-group support.

The ideal candidate will have experience with SEND, be comfortable with personal care, non-verbal learners, and familiar with PECS/Makaton/AAC.

Qualifications

• Experience with SEND, SLD, PMLD or complex needs.
• Willingness to provide personal care.
• Experience supporting non-verbal pupils with complex communication needs.
• Knowledge of PECS, Makaton or AAC devices.
• Understanding of sensory needs and strategies for complex learning.
• Moving and handling experience or willingness to undertake training.
• Strong communication and relationship-building with pupils and staff.
• Calm, patient, compassionate and resilient approach.
• Ability to work with teachers, therapists and other professionals.
• Proactive and flexible attitude to individual pupil needs.
• Genuine passion for making a positive difference in SEND.

Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SLD, PMLD and autism.
• Support academic, physical, social and emotional development.
• Assist teachers with engaging, sensory-based activities tailored to abilities.
• Support non-verbal pupils using PECS, Makaton or AAC.
• Provide personal care including toileting, feeding and daily routines.
• Assist with moving and handling and use of equipment.
• Support sensory processing through structured activities.
• Help pupils develop independence and daily living skills.
• Use positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
• Collaborate with therapists to support development.
• Assist EHCP targets and participation in activities.
• Maintain a safe, inclusive learning environment.
