Job summary

TeacherActive is assisting a specialist independent SEND school in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, seeking a SEND Learning Support Assistant to support pupils aged 8–18 with MLD, SLD and ASD. You will provide 1:1 and small-group support, assist teachers with differentiated activities and help pupils develop academic and personal skills.

The role emphasizes safeguarding, positive behaviour management, and building trusting relationships.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting children or young people with SEND, especially MLD/SLD or autism.
• Ability to adapt support to different learning needs.
• Experience helping pupils with communication or sensory needs.
• A calm, patient and empathetic approach with vulnerable young people.
• Confidence in implementing behaviour management and emotional regulation strategies.

Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEND.
• Support academic, emotional, social and personal development.
• Assist teachers with differentiated and engaging activities.
• Support pupils with communication difficulties and sensory needs.
• Use positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation when needed.
• Help pupils develop independence and life skills.
• Collaborate with staff to create a safe, inclusive learning environment.
• Follow safeguarding procedures and promote pupil welfare.
