Job summary

SENDhelp is seeking an SEN Learning Support Assistant for a specialist SEN secondary setting in Ware, Hertfordshire. You will support pupils aged 11–16 with a range of needs, helping them develop confidence, independence and love of learning.

The role offers ongoing collaboration with teachers and SEND professionals, with a focus on inclusive education, structure, and targeted interventions to enable success in lessons and transitions.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting children or young people with SEND is highly desirable.
• Candidates with transferable experience from education, care, youth work or similar environments are encouraged to apply.
• Most importantly, you\'ll need to be resilient, reliable and able to build positive relationships with young people who may communicate and learn in different ways.

Responsibilities

• Provide individual and small-group support to pupils with a range of special educational needs.
• Support pupils with Autism, learning difficulties and Speech, Language and Communication Needs.
• Work alongside teachers to adapt activities and resources to make learning accessible and engaging.
• Use visual aids, structured routines and communication strategies to help pupils understand expectations and participate in lessons.
• Encourage pupils to develop their confidence, communication, social skills and independence.
• Support pupils with emotional regulation and behaviour, using positive and consistent approaches.
• Help create a calm, safe and inclusive classroom environment.
• Monitor pupils\' engagement and progress and communicate observations to teaching and pastoral staff.
• Support pupils during lessons, transitions and less structured parts of the school day.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff and other professionals to help pupils achieve their individual targets.
• Build positive, professional relationships with pupils while maintaining appropriate boundaries and safeguarding standards.

About the School

This specialist secondary setting in Ware, Hertfordshire supports young people aged 11–16 with a range of special educational needs, including learning difficulties, Autism and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

The school provides a safe and nurturing environment where pupils are supported to make academic progress while developing their communication, confidence and independence. Learning is adapted around individual needs, with approaches including small class sizes, visual supports, structured routines, communication strategies and targeted interventions.

Staff work collaboratively with families and other professionals, including Speech and Language Therapy, educational psychology and autism specialists, to provide pupils with well-rounded support.

The successful SEN Learning Support Assistant will be patient, compassionate and genuinely motivated by helping young people overcome barriers to learning.

Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND is highly desirable, particularly experience with Autism, learning difficulties or communication needs. However, candidates with transferable experience from education, care, youth work or similar environments are also encouraged to apply.

Most importantly, you'll need to be resilient, reliable and able to build positive relationships with young people who may communicate and learn in different ways.
