Job summary

Tradewind Recruitment is seeking a SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant to support pupils with a range of additional needs in Canterbury and surrounding areas. The role is full-time with a £93 per day rate and an ASAP start, Monday to Friday, 8.30am-3.30pm, offering ad-hoc opportunities with potential for long-term placement.

You will work 1:1 or in small groups, supporting learning, communication, independence and social development under EHCP guidance.

Qualifications

  • A degree in SEN or a related subject.
  • A genuine interest in supporting children and young people with additional needs.
  • Patience, empathy, resilience, and a proactive attitude.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with pupils.
  • Willingness to support with personal care and medical needs where required.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • An enhanced DBS (child-only) on the update service, or willingness to obtain a new one.
  • Overseas police check if you have been out of the UK in the last 5 years for 6 months or more.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 or small-group basis with a range of additional needs.
  • Working with pupils with autism spectrum condition (ASC), severe learning difficulties (SLD), PMLD, complex needs and other impairments.
  • Supporting pupils with learning, communication, independence, social development and life skills.
  • Delivering personalised learning programmes in line with EHCPs.
  • Building positive, trusting relationships and providing emotional and behavioural support.
  • Using a calm, patient approach to support pupils with complex needs.
  • Collaborating with teachers, therapists and other staff to ensure consistent support.
  • Encouraging pupil confidence, independence, communication and social skills.
  • Assisting with personal care while maintaining dignity and safeguarding.
  • Applying SEN knowledge to support pupils effectively in classroom settings.
  • Active participation to promote a positive, inclusive learning environment.

The Role
  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 or small-group basis with a range of additional needs.
  • Working with pupils with autism spectrum condition (ASC), severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), complex needs, communication difficulties, and sensory impairments.
  • Supporting pupils with their learning, communication, independence, social development, and life skills.
  • Helping deliver personalised learning programmes in line with individual pupils' EHCPs.
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils and providing consistent emotional and behavioural support.
  • Using a calm, patient, and nurturing approach to support pupils with a range of complex needs.
  • Working closely with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to ensure pupils receive appropriate and consistent support.
  • Encouraging pupils to develop confidence, independence, communication, and social skills.
  • Supporting with personal care where required, always maintaining dignity, respect, and safeguarding.
  • Using your degree knowledge and understanding of SEN to support pupils effectively within the classroom.
  • Taking an active role in the classroom and contributing to a positive, inclusive learning environment.
Who We're Looking For

  • The right to work in the UK.
  • An enhanced DBS (child-only) on the update service, or willingness to obtain a new one. A new DBS costs £62, and we will reimburse the £62 once you complete 20 days of work with us.
  • If you have been out of the UK in the last 5 years for 6 months or more, you will also need to obtain an overseas police check.
