Job summary

Tradewind Recruitment is seeking Psychology graduates to work as SEN Teaching Assistants in Canterbury and surrounding areas. This full-time role offers £93 per day with an ASAP start, Monday to Friday, 8.30am-3.30pm.

You will support pupils with SLD, PMLD, ASC, and sensory needs on a 1:1 or small-group basis, applying your psychology knowledge in a practical education setting. Gain hands-on experience in SEN schools, develop personal care and communication skills, and collaborate with teachers

Qualifications

• A degree in Psychology or related subject.
• Interest in working with children with SEN.
• Willingness to learn about SEN and EHCPs.
• Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Willingness to assist with personal care and DBS checks.

Responsibilities

• Support pupils on a 1:1 or small-group basis with needs including SLD, PMLD, ASC, and sensory impairments.
• Apply psychology-based understanding to development, behaviour, and communication in a school setting.
• Assist with personalised learning programmes aligned to EHCP goals.
• Develop positive relationships and support emotional and behavioural needs.

Tradewind Recruitment are currently seeking Psychology Graduates to work as SEN Teaching Assistants in specialist SEN schools across Canterbury and the surrounding areas. This is an excellent opportunity for Psychology graduates considering careers in educational psychology, clinical psychology, child psychology, teaching, SEN, or other child-focused professions.

The Role

• Supporting pupils on a 1:1 or small-group basis with needs including severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), complex learning difficulties, autism spectrum condition (ASC), and sensory impairments.
• Applying your understanding of psychology, child development, behaviour, communication, and individual needs within a practical educational environment.
• Assisting with personalised learning programmes tailored to each pupil's EHCP, with a focus on communication, independence, social development, and life skills.
• Developing positive and trusting relationships with pupils and supporting their emotional and behavioural needs.
• Using a calm, patient, and nurturing approach when supporting pupils with communication difficulties, sensory needs, or behaviours that may challenge.
• Supporting pupils to develop their confidence, independence, communication, and social skills.
• Providing personal care where required, always maintaining pupils' dignity, privacy, and wellbeing.
• Working closely with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to create an inclusive and engaging learning environment.
• Observing and responding appropriately to individual pupil needs, helping you develop valuable practical experience alongside your Psychology degree.
• Being a positive role model who genuinely wants to make a difference in the lives of children and young people.

Requirements

• A degree in Psychology or a related subject.
• An interest in working with children and young people with special educational needs and/or additional needs.
• Previous experience working with children, young people, SEN, care, support work, or similar settings is highly desirable but not essential.
• A patient, compassionate, resilient, and adaptable approach.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• A willingness to learn and develop your understanding of SEN and individual pupil needs.
• A willingness to assist with personal care and medical needs where necessary.
• Must have the right to work in the UK and hold an enhanced DBS (child-only) on the update service, or be willing to get a new one. A new DBS costs £62, and we will reimburse the £62 once you complete 20 days of work with us.
• If you have been out of the UK in the last 5 years for 6 months or more, you will also need to obtain an overseas police check.
