Job summary

Teaching Personnel is recruiting a SEMH Teaching Assistant for a Catholic primary school in St Helens to support Key Stage 1 pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs.

You will work alongside the class teacher and pastoral team to provide tailored support, build relationships and help pupils develop emotional regulation and resilience for learning both in and out of the classroom.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children with SEMH, SEND or behavioural needs in a school or similar setting.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Calm and consistent approach to behaviour support.

Teaching Personnel is proud to be working with a welcoming Catholic primary school in St Helens to recruit a SEMH Teaching Assistant to support pupils in Key Stage 1.


This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping children overcome social, emotional and mental health barriers to learning. You'll play a vital role in building positive relationships, boosting confidence and helping pupils develop the skills they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.


As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you'll work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider pastoral team to provide tailored support for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Providing one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Building trusted relationships that help children feel safe, valued and ready to learn.
  • Supporting pupils to develop emotional regulation, resilience and positive behaviour strategies.
  • Encouraging engagement in learning through patience, consistency and creativity.
  • Working alongside teachers to adapt learning and remove barriers to achievement.
  • Monitoring progress and contributing to support plans where appropriate.
  • Promoting a calm, positive and inclusive learning environment.

You'll ideally have:


  • Experience working with children with SEMH, SEND or behavioural needs in a school or similar setting.
  • A calm and consistent approach to behaviour support.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to remain positive and patient in challenging situations.
  • A genuine passion for supporting children's wellbeing and educational progress.

Qualifications such as a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification are desirable but not essential. We welcome applications from candidates with backgrounds in youth work, residential care, mentoring, coaching or family support who are looking to move into education.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
